Wow, thanks for posting that. I lived in Monterey for a few years, and spent a few more years visiting my future wife while she was in School there.

I had always hoped that they would make another attempt to bring in a Great White while I was in the area. Now I'm on the other side of the country and probably wont have a chance to check it out.

That's pretty cool, I didn't know that they've never survived in captivity before.

Yeah I grew up studying and reading about sharks because of Jaws. I hope ths one lives long enough incaptivity, but she's gonna have to be set free eventually, I would think.

Sooner or later her tankmates are gonna become snacks!

I wish I was there to see it first hand, my friend saw a 20-footer off RI this summer, and when a whale dies out here, we usually get one or two chomping on it for a few days...still very rare to see them.

Well, it's tough to not put human values on other animals...they just do what they do...

Sharks are pretty much, opportunists. They don't really want anything to do with us unless we have something they want, but they are pretty skittish if you've seen them in open water.

I just think they are the perfect animal...

don't know if you followed the story about the great white that was hanging out in an inlet over on one of the Martha's Vineyard islands this summer??  Greg Skomal, shark expert-has presented many times at MMA's environmental symposium - was being
interviewed on national TV when a reporter asked him, several times in different ways -

"Why did the shark decide to swim into that inlet?"

Finally, Greg, very calmly, replied "You know, I asked the shark that same question - and he just ain't talking about that subject...":lol

The Monterey Bay Aquarium website has some more information on the whole program, as well as some quicktime video and pictures:
