Return of the Kind extended edition
« on: December 31, 2004, 04:07:43 AM »
I finally got around to watching the special extended edition. All four hours and ten minutes.

I have to say I totally dig it. The added content was nice, adding more to the characters, and making the story flow a bit better. I need to watch the theatric version again to catch all the changes.

Now, I do not want to hear about how Peter Jackson ruined the story… I have never read the books and do not care how he deviated in minor ways.

I am going to commit Tolkien blasphemy, and say that all three of the extended additions are better then the books.  Why? Because I have tried to get through the books so many times and they bore me to tears.

I have to say the LOTR series is the best thing to come out of Hollywood in the last 20 years if not ever.

Fantastic acting, stunningly beautiful locations and sets, special effects that are second to none, and a great story.

I am surprised these movies have not driven George Lucas to committed suicide for the atrocities he has forced on us with Starwars 1 and 2.

I never read the books either. Recently got the extended trilogy and I think it's one of the best box sets ever put out.

Took the better part of a week to watch all the movies and "extras."  The extras really make the set. I think total running time for just the movies is almost twelve hours.

Whether you like Jackson or not, if you watch the extras you can't help but admire how much he put into the movies and how much he inspired others to do the same.

As far as effects houses, I'd put Weta right up there with ILM and Rythm and Hughes, if not above them.

Weta has kicked ILM's bellybutton in this respect considering the numbers of not only CGI effects, but the quality and numbers of props etc.

Lucas is a hack as a director (a new Hope being the exception), but is an excellent producer. Empire is the best SW movie because he only came up with the story - someone else directed it ( a competent one at that), and Kasdan/Brackett wrote the script (imagine if Spielberg directed had Jedi like they both wanted to)
while he limited himself to just producing and SFX.

Having never read the book, I'm not going to compare (obviously) but the extended DVD's are the best boxsets out there, and truly a marvel...

Gto:  The movies are better than the books.

Curval:  Blasphemer!

Gto:  Ohhh..lay off, we haven't started yet.  All I said was that the films are better than the books!

Curval:  He said it again!

Skuzzy:  Now look!  Noone will stone anyone until I blow this whistle, even, and I'll make this perfectly clear, even if they do say that the movies are better than the books.

O'Club:  Nice shot!

Look at the downside... Because Peter Jackson has proved that a film of epic scale can be made again, we now get to sit through mindless drivel such as Troy, Alexander, King Arthur... and who knows what else.

I'm betting that some f*uckwit producer will decide that he can remake North by Northwest or Lawrence of Arabia.

Thanx...

I can still hope that someone can come up with something original and epic. I'm betting that the movies of the future will suck just as much as the movies of the past... now, they'll just be longer and on a "grander" scale.

Possibly, but the LOTR set was better than nothing... or at the very least, better than this.

They should do a remake of Pearl Harbor staring Ben Aflack, Josh Hartnett, Kate Beckinsale, and just for PC reason Cuba Gooding Jr......he can be a cook.

That would just rock!

I'm embarassed to admit it, but if Kate Beckinsale is in it... I'd watch it again. ;)
