F6F Vs. Spit
« on: January 07, 2005, 07:36:31 AM »
Being new, Im not really familiar with the performances of some of the planes.  I took out the "flying potato with wings" (f6f) to do a bombing run over A130 last night in a huge furball.  I wanted to just get in the town, drop bombs and return to the carrier.   I after my bomb run I found myself amidst the furball and decided to see what the F6F had in it.  I was very surprised at its performance.   to the spitty that came up on my six..was fun.  We got into a scissors and traded lead twice each.  Neither of us got gun solution, and I finally lost sight of him somewhere in front of me and I extended out to re-engage another fight.  I was surprised I was able to mix it up at low speeds with the spitty.  I was also surprised at how nimble the F6F was and I was able to live for about 2 minutes dodging people on my six.  I made a kill and was soon killed.
Overall, I think I might use this plane more.  I only expected the F6F to be useful for bomb runs.

The F6F is a fine dogfighter, not only a fine jabo.

The "HellKitty" is probabilly the best "All Around" plane in AH IMHO.

It Bombs well, has a good ord load, effective guns with the 6x 50's, big ammo load - you can spray forever and it is a decent dogfighter if you know it's strengths and weaknesses. Plus it is TOUGH - can tak a lot of damage and still wable back to land on the CV.

Can't go wrong with a plane with a hook.  :aok

When I'm in one and get jumped by a Spitty, I always die though
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Short window of opportunity against a Spit, you have to kill them while you are still fast - if you are slow you are usually quite quickly dead.

I've been flying the F6F alot lately too and have pretty much fallen in love with the plane...

It's one of those planes you really can take on just about anything in so long as they're willing to fight.  My favorite part about the plane is its flaps...  You can just hang, and hang, and hang.

I'd venture to say it's flap range gives it a fighting chance against a Spit even when the going gets slow, although like Redd said, you're probably dead.  It all depends on how well you can handle her S.L.O.W....

Nice thing is, this bird can take a TON of punishment.  So even in a very slow scissors where it's well nigh on impossible for the other guy to miss some crossing shots, you have a decent chance of surviving a few hits before, hopefully, landing a few of your own.

Nikis and Ki84s also make for some very fun fights.  Challenging, to say the least, but FUN.

Enjoy her

even the best hellcat pilots have a tough time against a good spit 5 pilot. give up your tail and try to get a snapshot off the next merge. hellcat can take alot of damage.

I've been doing some coop missions in my h2h room with f6f's etc. (franks coop missions) which are the most realistic you can squeak out of aces high.

The F6F was the only plane which we succesfully flew against any japanese aircraft. It was just uber!

Missions with F4U's and F4F's vs A6Ms and Ki's have been proven devestating for the allied AC...

Go F6F :)

Hellcrap = junk

About the only thing it is good for is dropping bombs and suicide runs.  Even there, it is outclassed by the F4U (fewer rockets and slower).

I LOVE my Cat!

Like to carry at least a slight E advantage into the fight. But don't fly too tentative...assume the kill and the kitty can beat the average spit jock out there...my 2 cents. :aok
