Ehhhh, that's kinda the point.  It's not about trying to steal 3 yards to make the next play, it's about keeping forward momentum as long as possible.

I don't really know that much about Rugby, it's not a sport ive ever enjoyed watching (but it's great fun to play, just cant remember the rules from schooldaze).  But apart from carrying the ball (hah!) with your hands, the similarity between that and American Football ends there.   Tactically, they are two totally different games imo.

Rugby always seemed to be more like contact soccer to me... it was a lot of fun to play though.

Definately more "non-serious" injuries in rugby (broken noses, fingers, etc) than football... but I never saw anyone really take a shot in rugby like I did in football.

Your average american football player couldn't last through 1 half of a rugby game.

Position: Halfback
He played for Carlisle Indian School, Cleveland Indians, Oorang Indians, Rock Island Independents, New York Giants, Canton Bulldogs and Chicago Cardinals.
He was the most famous American athlete of the age. He was excellent at every sport he tried.
He won the decathlon and penthatlon events at the 1912 Olympics.
He did play major-league baseball from 1913 to 1919.
Football was his favorite sport. In 1912, Thorpe scored 25 touchdowns and 198 points in leading his Carlisle Indian School team to a national collegiate championship.
Jim Thorpe was selected by the nation's press in 1950 as the most outstanding athlete of the 20th century.
Jim Thorpe was also declared as "America's Greatest football player of the half-century," in 1950.

Impressive!  :aok
This must be interesting for the thrashers of American football and baseball. The  guy won both decathlon and pentathlon at the Olympics.
And the pentathlon is the event borrowed from the ancient Olympic games. It looks like the American sports traditions have deeper roots than one can expect.

I watched on TV several games of ??? , the Australian (if I'm not mistaken) variant of rugby.
Even knowing nothing about the rules it was interesting to watch.

What I can pay attention to in all these football games is WATCHABILITY of them, and their PLAYABILITY. That is how much interesting it is to watch them, and how much interesting it is to actually play them.
When I was a student at the K. State University I played basketball, volleyball, and handball. The strange (to me at least) thing with the handball is relatively low watchability and so intensive and captivating playability. I still vividly remember the thrill of it.
I would say that watchability of American football is undermined by the multitude of "breaks" in the game flow, whereas in football-soccer one point scoring system is the obvious flaw. Playability in both of these games seems (I never played American football) to be on comparable level, with injury levels' statistics unknown to the general public.

John9001 - The idea, I think, with Rugby is to get the ball across the other side's line. Hence, you offload the ball when it looks like you are about to be stopped and your side has the position to carry it further forward.

Cricket is generally criticized by people who haven't taken the time to learn and understand the rules, or who don't enjoy sitting in the sun drinking beer. It's a very simple game whichever way you approach it...
War! Never been so much fun. War! Never been so much fun! Go to your brother, Kill him with your gun, Leave him lying in his uniform, Dying in the sun.

American football is the best sport out there.

Especially that if American football is such a bad sport, is that why its being spread to Canada and Europe which now have started their own leagues.

when it comes to 'worlds roughest sports', i think it comes down to the following four (in no particular order)

american football
hockey
rugby
irish hurling

bastketball in my mind needs to be full contact. otherwise its one of the weakest sports out there i think.

the american baseball world series IS for the championship of the world. if the team which won the WS went to the olympics, they'd mop the floor with the other countries without a problem. theres really no comparison i think. i yearn for the day when all sports are international but due to travel constraints i doubt it would happen.

Good question...here's another:

If the real football (soccer) is such a bad sport why is it played and watched by hundreds of millions of people throughout the world?

Soccer is a gay sport? Oh, pshaw- it is not. There is too much running and you aren't allowed to touch each other. Gay sports are red light- green light, truth or dare and, my favorite, Twister.
