I watched on TV several games of ??? , the Australian (if I'm not mistaken) variant of rugby.
Even knowing nothing about the rules it was interesting to watch.
What I can pay attention to in all these football games is WATCHABILITY of them, and their PLAYABILITY. That is how much interesting it is to watch them, and how much interesting it is to actually play them.
When I was a student at the K. State University I played basketball, volleyball, and handball. The strange (to me at least) thing with the handball is relatively low watchability and so intensive and captivating playability. I still vividly remember the thrill of it.
I would say that watchability of American football is undermined by the multitude of "breaks" in the game flow, whereas in football-soccer one point scoring system is the obvious flaw. Playability in both of these games seems (I never played American football) to be on comparable level, with injury levels' statistics unknown to the general public.
