Need help with sound and sights
« on: January 18, 2005, 07:14:01 AM »
Yesterday afternoon I tryed to get AH to load and it would get to the 3/4 screen , then back to desktop. I tryed a little bit of everything, but the game would not load.
I uninstalled AH, then did a complete download from scratch. (About 11 hours :D )
Now I am trying to get resetup and have a couple of problems.
#1 When I go into the game and put a plane on the runway , I get just a white square where the gunsight should be. I checked in gunsight setup and it shows defaut.bmp, but even there it just shows a white square.
#2 I have absolutely no game sounds. Sounds are working correctly in windows, but not in the game.
I just updated to the latest sound drivers about a week and a half ago.

 I`m running windows XP, P4 2.8.
  ATI Radeon 9700
  Soundblaster 5.1

  Need some help.

Sounds like the only way your gonna actually get good advice is to run dxdiag.exe and e-mail the report to skuzzy to look over.  Could be a host of different probs.

did you save your settings and place them back into the AH directory?

IF so - delete your vid8.cfg from your settings folder -

Now - remove your cache folder from the AH directory
then restart AH - try that for the vid stuff - might help with the white squares. You can also change your max texture size and try that =then place it back to where you had it.

As far as sounds - are you using stock or custom?

I didn`t save anything. I uninstalled and did a complete DL and reinstall.
I reduced max textures and also res , as suggested by Skuzzy, with no results.
I`ve been playing on a daily basis with no probs, excluding those that can be expected, then BOOM out of the blue.
Do you happen to have a list or a link of what Windows XP can be trimmed down to as for as processes runing?
  Thanks for the help.

do a search for end it all -

will kill most unnesseacary processes.

blackviper.com? i beleive has a list of processes / and what they do.

I usually do a google search for any process that i'm not sure of - Google comes up with a site that is really helpful. Think winguides or something like that.

OK, Thanks Waff.
I`m running EndItAll and have been for quite a while.
So far I can only get it down to 27 processes  with a 4% usage which Skuzz says is too high.
Still scratching my head......... and other places.

What`s got me buffaloed is what caused this all of a sudden when it had been running on a daily basis.

Processes are not the only place to look, as the svchost.exe process can start several services by itself, and there are normally several instances of it running.  You have to kill the services.

OK. I found out what the problem was with the sights. In setup/preferences/gunsights ,in the preview box for the sight. it shows just as a white square for default and other sights as shown below.

I copied the P51dwht sight from the sight gallery and placed it in the Gunsight folder in AHII. I then get a preview as shown below and, when selected, I get a sight in the plane in the game.

I still don`t know why the default bmp or others shows as white with no sight but I can work around this.

Now, I still have no ingame sound.  After finding the sights were hosed on the fresh install , I am now wondering if the same or similar might be true of the sounds. I don`t know how to check or verify this. Any ideas?

OK, here`s the latest. :D
Evidently the sounds and sights both were hosed in the DL. I remembered that I had a copy of the sounds folder from AH1 I believe. I put it in AH folder and now have sound. I guess it won`t hurt anything. At least it`s working.

:D   Well after replacing the sounds folder with the older one it seems to be working OK. At least the short time I ran it it worked.
Anything but the dreaded 10 to 11 hour Download. DOH!
BTW Waff, I was on your site last night doing some window shopping. Great site.

Thanks -

11 hour download wouldn't be much fun...the current sound pack that I have out is around 115mb...lol. But you can download the individual aircraft files one at a time. IF you want to try it out - I would recommend downloading the base pack first. Thats the file that has all of the explosions, crashing sounds, ect....all of the re-edited default sounds. You could grab that (15mb) then add on the individual planes when ever you want. If you get a chance and want to try some out - I'd recommend the p51d, p38, 109s and a6ms to try out. You can just download those without downloading the basepack.( Some of the effects might sound katty whompus level wise, since blending 2 different sound sources, but you'll get the drift of the sounds) They are self-extracting files. Then just place the extracted folder ("p51d" for example) into your sounds folder.

I think the individual folder include all engine sounds, guns and operational noises (flaps/gears) and possibly some damage or hit sounds.
