Low Level 26 Raid...It Can Be Done!! Bish Dar Down
« on: April 04, 2000, 09:54:00 PM »
Well, if I hadn't flown it myself, I would never have believed it!

Tonight fellow Musketeers, Sniper, HappMSKT, and myself just flew one of the most intense missions I have flown in a very long time.

The mission (volunteers only): Bomb Bish Dar leaving from Rook Field 6.

Planes: 3 unescorted B-26's.

Flight Profile: NOE all the way to pop up point to get above HQ ack.  (yes, I almost soiled myself on this one....hehe).

Sniper was flight lead, with Happ and I on either side in a VERY tight low level flight.  We flew through the canyons coming out near F15.  At this point our alt was never over 100' above the ground.

As we exited the canyons we noticed a lone high con above is...a P38.  We flew underneath of him undetected, but he knew something was down there somewhere, and kept scanning for us.

The hard part was still ahead of us (if NOE in the canyons in a loaded B-26 isn't hard enough).  We had to make it all the way to Bish HQ to deliver the late Christmas Presents for those weenie staff personal in the rear area.  This is where it started to get interesting, and where Sniper kept the commands short and to the point (basically he said can the chatter and tighten up, RW discipline I guess).

As we started our pop-up to climb to bomb alt. (sorry that info is top-secret) the lone P-38 sighted us.

By luck of the draw, Happ was tail-end charlie, so he wished us luck on the RW as the 38 commenced its run on our buddy.  Happ and the 38 dueled for a long time...Happ trailing smoke and fuel and the 38 very wounded, but neither plane downed the other (report I got from tail-gunner, he should be paying attention to our plane...hehe).  Anyway, this allowed Sniper and I to drop our eggs in the basket from our bomb alt of under 10k (the dar went down because an earlier 17 raid damaged the dar for us).

Now the ride back (yes we have to return the way we came in).  As we were forming back up, Happ flew too low over the city and the lousy aa gunners nailed him.  So Sniper and I went low-level again (don't ask why, dar was down, but it was fun all the same) and made a NOE run all the way back to 6, where we buzzed the field in wingtip to wingtip formation and landed.

Longggg Post, but what a blast!!  That low level raid was the most fun I've had in a long time, and apparently it can be done!

Cobra out!

WTG!

Bet that was more exciting than the high alt bombing.

Not as much fun climbing for an hour as it is hugging the ground trying not to be seen IMHO.

Cobra,  Make sure to tell me the next time you guys do this.  I have a hard time trying to talk others into doing the low level raids like this.  Maybe I was logged out by the time you guys started, but I'm sorry I missed it.

I love the low level flying!

I found a good program to convert the bitmaps with is Polyview. http://www.polybytes.com/
All ya do is start it, select FORMAT CONVERSIONS....and then select the .bmps, I change them to .gifs <you can select 1 or many> and then ADD, and then CONTINUE...and ewe are finished!  (well ya have to select the tgt folder)  A 600KB bmp will be an 80kb.gif or less.  In Hi RES, the .gif will be 200KB or so.  But the clarity, looks exactly like the .bmp.
