I also considered it could be an early picture of the Scharnhorst before the refit, but two details preclude that possibility.
1) Before the refit the Scharnhorst had a flat funnel cap, not the raked version in Brady's pic.
2) There is no coat of arms on the bow in this pic, and both had their plaques removed during the war.
Since this has to be during the war, it cant be an early pic of the Scharnhorst, thus it must be the Gneisenau.
Scharnhorst also had a more blunt verticle bow (as in the early Pocket Battleships) than the clipper type of her sister Gneisenau before the refit. Otherwise they were basiclly similar topside before the refit.
Both ships had several different versions of funnel caps installed during their life times so you have to watch very closely in useing that as a refrence point.
The bows along with the missing pre-war Crest shields is what I was looking at in ID'ing the ship.
