Ever wonder how that warrantee started?
I was wandering through a library a while back and noticed a book on the history of sears so I started flipping through it.
One section went something like this
Seems Sears was originally a traveling watch salesmen, Eventually he opened his own store and started offing his unconditional guarantee.
On customer inquired about the guarantee and how unconditional it was. Sears told him if it ever broke for any reason he would replace it for free no questions asked.
With that the man took the watch out of his pocket, dropped it on the ground and stomped on it. Then picked up the now destroyed watch and placed it o the counter.
without batting an eye Sears reached behind the counter and gave him a new one.
Sear must be rolling in his grave now to see what it has become
Used to be you needed anything anything at all you could get it from sears.
They even sold Kit Houses at one point and Patton himself used to order replacement parts for his tanks in the years between WWI and WWII (often paying for them out of his own pocket)
Every year I remember going through the sears catalog looking for the things I wanted for Christmas
Then I guess the bean counters took over and headed the company away from what made it great and ruined it in the process as they usually do.
Sears used to be THE store.
Now its merely A store.
