I got Verizon DSL Four days ago, and on the second day I was up to my ears in Bad Things.

It was my own fault too, I turned off the Micirsoft Firewall to play Urchin in CMAK, and half way through, I knew something was wrong. I know stupid mistake and beleive me lesson Learned.

Everytime I thought I had it fixed, I didnt. So here I am Day 4, and finally seeing good results.

I used a a whole slew of Programs to get the desired results,

In order, Keep in mind Everytime I added a program to the list, the more frustrated I became. Not because it was complicated, but because it kept finding something new.

Adaware
Spybot S&D
TrojanHunter4
TDS-3 Pro
HijackThis
CCCleaner
Stinger

The only two programs that are running are Spybot S&D and TH4.

Should I turn these off while Playing AH2? Is it safe?

Nef,

Get yourself a third party firewall, preferably hardware but software will do.  Windows firewall is useless at best and a hindrance at worst.  I use a Linksys wireless router/firewall with my cable modem and also run Nortons Antivirus constantly.  I rarely if ever have any problems with trojans/spyware/viruses etc.

AH itself won't give you any problems but the other jerks on the net scanning IP's will constantly bombard you without a firewall in place.

I have a Westell Model327W Router/Modem, And I'm planning on hooking up other computers tomorrow.


Should I invest in a better router?

My main question is Skuzzy in the Tech Forum says to turn off all AntiVirus Stuff before hand. My computer is 100% fine as far as I can tell. And TH4 and SBSD are running at all times, Not scanning of course but monitoring changes and such.

use symantec security check

http://www.symantec.com   go thru the test then follow there instructions ..

ive done this for several years , i only run a AV program . my pc is pritty safe and passes all the tests there but the AV program part (but that even fails if your running there av also)

note the only times ive had to fight off a bug was when using IE ,, since i went to mozzilla i havn't had any problems .

To add to your freeware choices - zonealarm is a very good free firewall AND microsoft has a beta antispam tool that is a free download and has been getting very good reviews. Do a search on the microsoft website to find it.

Yes, Zone Alarm is good with lots of customisation options. If it has a virus checker/blocker it would be a good choice.

I went the Trend Micro route. Updates come in every couple of hours which is reassuring. TM has its own firewall which is good because TM won't work with Zone Alarm, which has to be uninstalled.

My wife's pc got a very persistent spyware program that kept trying to access the net -- it was flagged by zone alarm (free version) and thus saved us from being taken over. The free programs like ad-aware and spybot search and destroy couldn't get rid of the problem, so i bought webroot's spy sweeper - it cleaned house. If you can't solve your problem spy sweeper is the answer. Only drawback is $30 annual renewal.

best way I found to avoid trojans ect.. is have background monitoring enabled and java off or limited. and stay off the porn !

and when you do "clean" your sys. if its winxp back up on a external drive then disconnnect it. shut down sys restore , restart sys. then clean it up. I got a 20gig drive for 20$ at the local comp boneyard place (goverment discards) and use that for that purpose. then i kick ALL security measures into highgear and reconnect the 20gig and vaporize whats on that disk and disconnect it. Used a sheetmetal hole punch and the cable hangs out the back of my box.

just use norton and winfirewall myself..tried all the others but its pretty easy to zap system files if you're not very careful.

why dont ya just install a 10 dollar slide in rack for the 20 gig hd ?? alot easier then having cables hangin out of your pc ... talk about tweeky
