Losing all Textures midflight
« on: January 31, 2005, 08:05:12 PM »
Been having problems since I came back with my screen suddenly going white during a fight. At random intervals, I had been losing all my textures, then they'd reload slowly. Kind of a problem in a fight or low on the deck. Tried making some adjustments in game, in the control panel, and also by changing drivers. Finally disabled custom skins, problem went away. Turned it back on again, and I think i've found the culprit. The custom Spit V skin by Sparow, with 312FS/RAF markings, causes me to immediately lose my textures upon seeing it. They reload, but even in the hangar, each time I select that skin, bam, no textures.

Since I often fly in 'furballs', (and no furball is ever lacking spits), it would seem possible, if not likely, that someone using this skin in my proximity has been the cause of my random white-outs.

Having said that, I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's had this problem, or who can replicate this. I'd like to know if this is something odd with a particular skin, or if this is a problem on my pc. I went through every plane/vehicle with a custom skin, tried everyone, and this is the only one that caused any problems for me.

My system specs:
FX5200 256MB AGP Vid Card, running 66.72 drivers (tried 53.03, 56.72, and Omega's 53.03 drivers as well)
AMD xp 2400+ cpu on Asus A7N8X-X mobo
512MB DDR RAM (pc2700?)
SB PCI 128 SC

In game, I run 1024*768, 512 textures, no animated water, and most eyecandy on, sliders set 2/3rd way to Perf.

I'd love to figure out the problem here, and I appreciate your feedback/attention/malaise/flames :p

cheers,

I´m getting this texture loss also.
Can be quite annoying.

Specs.

AMD 1,8 ghz
GF MX4400 128mb integrated
388mb RAM
Win XP Pro

Runnin at 1024x768  512 textures all sliders almost all the way to the right.

Not sure what is causing it on my side but your theory sounds valid.
Because when i think about it it´s most common in furballs and close to enemy fields.

Soon I will be stalking the elucid hub with a new ride!!!!!!  Muahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!

What was that skin again? :D

But seriously, have you tried deleting the skin from your skins and cache folders?  That may help if the files are corrupt.

Okay, almost 2 months, virtually no feedback. HTC- can you please tell me how to delete this skin and keep it from loading? The skinners have done a fantastic job producing so much eye candy- it really sucks that I have to disable all skins because 1 is buggy. I'd really appreciate some feedback here. After trying 4 sets of drivers, 3 texture settings, and how textures preload, I still dump all textures upon seeing sparow's spitfireV skin.

did you try deleting it at all in the process?  A new copy might be all you need.

I have the same problem with that skin.  All other skins are fine but that 1.  Even when I select that skin for spit V, while in hanger then textures get reloaded.  It only does it on that skin.  Yes, I have deleted along with the plane cache and redid everything.  Still same result.

You do not want to be running with 512 textures on an FX5200.  NVidia claims that card can do more than it really can.  Turn t down to 256.
Also, you should be using the 61.77 drivers from NVidia as the later drivers are pretty much for the FX6xxx series of video cards.

I'll check out that skin again, but in every instance, removing the *.res and cache files the problem has been cleared up.  Removing only the cached skin will not correct the issue.  You also have to remove the *.res file as that is where the cached file comes from.

If he deletes the skin wouldnt it just download it all over again?  Or am I misunderstanding how the "skin updater" thing works?

Hmmm, I've been running 1024 and 512 (switched to 512 when 2.02 came out, IIRC) since beta, without any real issues (excluding some bugs/driver issues, which all resolved). I'm running Omega's 61.77 drivers currently, switched to those in the last month.

How do I tell which skin that is in the cache/res folders?

Just remove all the Spit V resource (.res) and cache files.

Yes Star, they will download again, but there is nothing wrong with this skin.  Somewhere along the way a bad download happened and everyone who has propoerly cleared this from thier game folders has been fine with the re-download.
I just checked the skin again, and it is fine.

Hubs, I am telling you that the 5200 will not be able to keep up with 512 texture sizes.  It is too much for that video card.  You will have some issues we cannot fix due to how slow the card is.

Hmmm, deleted all the spit V cache and res files, logged in, skins downloaded, selected this skin, textures dumped again.

What now? Know what might be the precise cause? Even if it's not buggy, there must be something different about this particular skin. Any other things to try?

Thanks,

Did you try selecting the option not to see other plane's skins?  If you dont view it, it cant affect you.  Of course you couldnt see any other skins either, but it might help you narrow down the problem or eliminate that as your problem.

Yeah Star, I have to run with skins disabled, no problems when I do. I was suffering from the white outs for a while, then when skins were disabled for a while, no more whiteouts. when they came back, so did the whiteouts, so I started disabling the skins. then about a month ago, i tried 4 more driver sets, finally winding up with the 61.77 drivers as well as updating bios, and also made changes to about every possible video setting in the hopes that I just had some random X factor causing them.  for whatever reason, my pc hates that skin.

ah well, such is computer gaming.
