It's not really high... a Navy Commendation Medal is higher.

It's #20 in order of importance, out of over 60.

It's nothing to sneeze at.

I have seen that its the second highest citation you can get in the US.

Anyways... our special forces just got it from your president. Its supposed to be the first time since vietnam that a special force unit has gotten it.

The "PUC" - It's a unit citation, everyone that served in the specified unit between the given dates are allowed to wear it.

Yup...  Saw it now. Not an individual citation but a unit.

"Criteria

The Navy Presidential Unit Citation is awarded in the name of the President to units of the Armed Forces of the United States and cobelligerent nations for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. The unit must have accomplished its mission under such extremely difficult and hazardous conditions to set it apart from and above other units participating in the same campaign. The degree of heroism required is the same as that which would be required for award of a Navy Cross to an individual."

Nilsen,

The PUC is a very big deal.

15 or 20 years from now when you can read about it in great detail in a book, you'll be very impressed with your Countrymen.

My father in law got one for anti-submarine warfare in 42/43. He was in VB93/107, flying PB4Y1s; his plane sank 2 subs. He was radioman/crown gunner.

It was something he was proud of right up until he died in August of last year.

Declassification of after-action reports, and guys who were directly involved getting 'out of the business' and either being interviewed or writing a book so you'll have some more detailed first-hand accounts.
