I've seen people give map coordinates with 3 numbers. I know each sector has numbers assigned (i.e. 10,8). I'm assuming that third number gives a more precise location within that sector. What does it mean?

Look at the numerical keypad on your computer for reference to the location for the third number (and even fouth on occassion for greater precision).

For example, if someone said enemy bomber Angles 20, at 10,12.5 it would be grid square 10,12 and the enemy is right in the center of the square. You can use numbers 1 through 9 as they are laid out on your keypad to show the location.

Very simple and brilliant idea really. Some can add a fouth number for great precision.

Excellent! I knew it was something simple. I assumed maybe that the sector was divided into grid of some sort but couldn't figure out the pattern.

As rogue pointed out, 4th number, if used, gives a precision within a 8.33 mile square(each grid is 25 miles, each 3rd number would represent 8.33 miles, and the 4th number would represent the contact to the area within 2.77 miles of that grid location, very precise!)

I'm new to AH, but I definately read in the help files (specifically under "Clipboard") that each grid is 25 SQUARE miles. That is only 5 miles along each side and about 7 miles from corner to corner. It seems to me, though, that the travel time through a sector makes it to be more of a 25 x 25 mile grid, or 625 square miles/sector. Just curious if it is a misprint in the help files.

HMR, the 25 SQUARE miles must be a misprint. It believe it's a square of 25 miles each side. Assuming your average speed is 250 mph that would give you a transit time of about 6-7 minutes to cross a grid which is about right.

There is also a scale on the top right edge of the map that shows the grid to be 25 mi.
