White screen, then error msg
« on: February 10, 2005, 10:33:01 PM »
Just installed a new MB and CPU and did a reformat.

MB ECS 755-A2
CPU AMD 3200
750 megs of RAM
XP w/SP2 all updated.
DirectX 9c
Geoforce 6600GT

Have tried 66.93 NVIDIA driver with no luck and the 66.81whql Guru driver. :(
Have downloaded the full version of AH2 twice incase the first one was corrupt, but each time I get the start up screen with the video options and then a white screen. After that every time I try I get the window that says “aceshigh.exe” had a serious problem and had to close. Have only checked the box that was preload in mem. All the rest were unchecked. Should I check another box? Problem is Inly get one chance to try different video settings. After that I only get the error message. I have to uninstall and reinstall to have the chance to try another vid setting.

Ideas?

Yes, installed the MB drivers off the CD that came with it.

Try this thread daddog

http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=139575

Other thing I can suggest for problems with that particular card and the new drivers...........

Right click on the desktop, choose Properties.  Go to the Settings tab, and click the Advanced button.  Go to the Troubleshooting tab now and make sure the box "Enable Write Combining" is clear.  Default is usually checked.  I have read in the DH forums that unchecking this can help problems with this card and the newer Nvidia drivers.

The more I see people buy the 6600 cards, the more convinced I am if I upgrade it will be all the way to the 6800 or nothing.  Good luck!

I unchecked the Enable Write Combining box.

I flashed my BIOS (1.0c) with no luck. Have tried several different drivers from the latest 66.93 NVIDIA to 6681, 6676, 6672, 6576 and zeropoint6697. No joy. Other games work fine. All but Aces High. When I start it I get the pic below with Microsoft telling me of the problem. Below that is a pic of the details.

I uninstall all my vid drivers before I try a new one. I have pulled my two sticks of RAM and tried them separately to see if that could be a problem. I have formatted my HD and started fresh. Downloaded AH twice in case the first download was corrupt.

Chip Type: GeForce 6600 GT
DAC Intergrated RAMDAC
Memory 128
Bios Info Version 5.43.02.36.00

Can’t understand why other games work, but Aces High. Nor can I understand why this Video card worked with my old MB and CPU, but not with this one. Ready to return this card and get another. Just banging my head against a wall here.

Ideas anyone?

Amazing.

It was the fact that I did not have sound drivers working quite right. I have not had sound, but I was not worried about that. I just assumed that it was a video problem. A squadie said (when I mentioned I did not have sound) that could be the problem.

I went into CMOS and enabled the onboard sound (thought it already was). Went into Windows and still did not have sound. Some sound features were still grayed out. Went out, back into CMOS and then disabled the onboard sound. Put in a Sound Blaster Live Value card that was gathering dust I had. Back into Windows and had sound. Started up Aces High and it worked.

Thanks for the help gents. :)

DOH!  I just assumed you had the sound card in.  Yes, Aces High will not work without a sound card.  However, it should gracefully exit with an error from the game.
I'll check with HT on this one.
