Came across this photo in the history of the 8th FG.

Ken Ladd was an 80th FS Headhunter Ace.

This is a P38J he used field modified with 6 50 cals.  Apparently it was quite devestating but the idea was dropped.

I've seen photos of test 38s with that kind of set up but I didn't realize it had ever been used in combat.

Not that I was aware of, Wolfala. I believe the 20mm was removed to make more room for more ammunition for the .50 cals.

There was also a super strafer P38 with 8 .50cals that was created but never saw service.

I dont remember if it was mcguire or bong that once flew a 38 with 6 50 cals. He came back and commented that the plane seemed 'nose heavy' to him.
