Hey guys, I stupidly clicked on someone's away message on aim that said something like "BEACH PICTURES CLICK HERE (link) :-D"

So It apparently installed a virus, which I have unable to rid. It has somehow messed with my active X settings so that norton or any other program is able to use active x. Here are some screenshots:

I deleted the files that were displayed on the first screenshot by hand because the program was unable to. Then I uninstalled all of Java systems in Add/Remove Programs. This hasn't helped me so far and I'm at a loss for what to do. All I need it to be able to get Norton running. I also tried safe mode to no avail.

I got it in the first place because I had just logged out of a game and had disabled Norton auto-protect. Bah.

ANY help is appreciated.

Use this to manually update your version of Norton with the latest virus definitions.

After installing them, I'd go to safe mode and run the Norton scanner. If this doesn't work, try setting your bios boot order to

1. CD-ROM
2. Floppy
3. Hard Drive
4. Network Boot (If applicable)

and place the Norton disk in your primary CD drive (the one that came on the computer). Boot up the computer and run from the disk. I've never had to do this so I'm not sure how it works, but I know you can boot from the Norton disk. If that enables you to scan the computer that way, it'll bypass ActiveX controls.

Go to the Norton website. Go directly to the Norton website.

Ok, joking aside. Go to the Norton/Symantec website. Many modern "smart" viruses target the things anti-virus programs need in order to function (like active-x controls). Others insunuate themselves into the "sig" files that the AV program uses to determine "safe" files on your computer, and thus overlooks what it is supposed to find.

Go to the Symantec website and do a search for your virus. They will give you specific instructions how to both get rid of it and repair your AV to full functionality.

I spent an hour looking for that virus on Norton's website last night for him and couldn't find it. It might be there, but it's under a different name.

To get rid of the java bytever do this

Go to Settings > Control Panel and open the Java
Plug-in Applet and click on the "Cache" tab then
click the "Clear" tab. This will clear the Cache
and the infected files should be deleted. Run another
virus scan to be sure.

Generally once infected your computer never works entirely right again. In the future when things go wrong you can't be sure whether it's a left over issue with the virus/trojan/worm or something else.

IMHO, save important data to a CD, reformat your hard drive. Install Windows. Install MOBO chipset drivers and LAN/Ethernet drivers if builtin. Install NAV as first application and fully update it. Scan the data CD to make sure it's clean.

All in all should take one day to get back to normal.

I agree, I've never been able to fully recover a system that gets hit (see post on daughters box)...

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. I may end up having to reformat, but I pretty much licked the ACTUAL virus. Now it's just giving me the "Security settings do not allow Active X to be run blah blah" thing now. Games and every other program run fine. Any hints?

BTW what the hell is Active X?

Active X is one of the mechanisms that allows unsolicited content to be placed on your computer (i.e. Spyware/Malware).

You can enable it in the Security settings of Internet Explorer. Under Tools->Internet Options->Security tab.

ive removed lots of virus's from pc's without having to format and they still work fine .. it just depends on the virus and if you know how to get it all ..

its really hard to explain .. but the viropedia's ussually have a very detailed instuctions on what to edit in the regestry ect .. its the multiable bugs that can be a pain

P.s, Get rid of internet "bug catcher "explorer ... firefox is way better .

And firefox does not use active X anyway.
