Fox, that first spit shot is really great. What shutter speed were you using?

Here's PorkyII from last weekend. I'm trying to get warmed up for the big Chino show.

Moose, the 10D and D70 are good entry level bodies that would last a while. Beyond that, make investments in lenses. You can always get a better body later and use the first one as a backup.

The big Photography convention (PMA) is at the end of this month. There should be announcements as to what's coming out.

Hi Jigsaw

Thanks for the compliment. I used 1/125 on that shot and was lucky with the light. The shot below had to be taken at 1/250 and as you can see has nearly frozen the prop. Still can't complain, I don't suppose I will ever get the chance to shoot an La-9 again !! I also haven't yet managed to grab a P38 - maybe next time I'm in the US.

Fox; 1/125? Change my original "really great" to "extremely great".  Were you using a lens with IS/VR?

The P38 was shot at 1/160. Out of about 100 frames, that was the only one that was fairly free of camera shake. Was using a non IS/VR, though. For next months flight (P51) I'm going to rent a IS/VR to see if that helps.

If you're ever in SoCal when the 38 is flying, I'll cover your admission to the museum.

Keep up the great shots.

VR/IS is mightily expensive, a good support or a monopod is not. Makes it a lot more difficult to track something though.

Hmm, all these aircraft pics make me itch to go to England again in the summer and see some airshows...

Yes Jigsaw, I was using my 100-400L lens with IS. Makes a big difference on these hand held shots with low shutter speeds. I managed to buy this lens via the Fredmiranda BBS in the US and got it shipped over for less than half the price it would have cost over here. Brilliant lens, very easy to use if a little heavy on the pan at full zoom, and uses batteries like no tomorrow with IS on.

Oh and by the way, I'll take you up on your offer to pay the entrance fee when I'm next in California - always wanted to visit Chino.

And Hogenbor, let me know when your coming over, maybe get to meet up.

Man, I feel like a medieval leftover with my manual focus, chemical film Minolta :-) Image stabilization is extremely impressive technology - partly because it's so subtle ;-)

I just looked through some pictures from last year and found one that I like quite well "in spite":

From HoHun:
"Man, I feel like a medieval leftover with my manual focus, chemical film Minolta"

Hehe, use an XG-1 from 1980, know what it is.

Yet, not all bad, there are some really good lenses around. The best I have is a zoom lens, 35-135. I have a 80-200 as well, but the glass quality seems to be markedly less.
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Always amazing to think that Spit was flying combat over 60 years ago.
