Connection Issues Since 2.02
« on: February 15, 2005, 03:19:36 PM »
Hi Skuzzy
First off, I realize the release of 2.02 has nothing to do with my connection,  I'm just  describing the approximate time frame.  Since that time, my connection to the MA looks like this at best:

Prior to that the varience was usually flat except for the occasional small spike, nothing so large or so frequent as shown there.

I ran Ping Plotter today, 10 samples, one sample every 5 seconds:

Watching the graphs run for awhile usually shows quite a bit of packet loss at hop #9, but occasionally I just have bad packet loss all across the board.  It seems strange that I never had a problem until a couple of weeks ago, is there anything I can do about this?
thanks

Hate to tell you this, but that regular spike is a program running in background on your computer.  Probably spyware/malware, but that is what causes that regular spike.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I had kind of suspected spy/adware, but here's the thing.  I've run Ad Aware, Spybot, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware,  and they all found some stuff which I have gotten rid of, now they all come up clean, and I still have the consistent spike.  Is there another program I should try?

Or is it possible that it's not my computer that's the issue, but rather another computer on the network that's bugged and hammering away?  I have a home LAN with 3 PCs on it (all clean as of 7 pm today)  that connects to a wireless access point across the street.  Would it be possible for another computer that connects to this access point to be fouling up things up?

An external influence could have the same effect, if the remote computer is hammering away at your Internet/network connection at regular intervals.

It would be odd though.

Heretik, what kind of firewall are you running?  If you have a network, I'm assuming you have a router in the mix?  Any decent firewall should be telling you if you are getting pings and where they are coming from.  Report them to your ISP.  You can also request they change your IP address (if you have a fixed IP).

If you rule out external influence you may have a defective router or cable modem (unlikely but possible).
