I use Exact Audio Copy (EAC) in secure mode for all my CD Ripping.  I then use LAME to do all the encoding.  Use these instructions  or mirror for near-CD quality MP3s.  (Chris Myden's site seems to be having problems at the moment.) I can't tell the difference between the MP3's created this way and the original CDs.  The key is the "secure mode" in EAC.  It's slower, but you do not get any pops/hisses/noise in the final product.
