Need opinions on the best routers for business?
« on: February 16, 2005, 01:42:27 PM »
We have a Netgear FVS318 router here at the office that seems to be a continuing headache. Our boss got suckered into a fractional T1 service for voice, internet and fax and it absolutely sucks.

Anyway it seems that the current router keeps blocking or shutting down the connection to the internet. We get random times where the internet is unable to be accessed and it periodically takes between 3-6 tries to get an email sent out.

Any ideas?????

It sounds like it might be broken.

Cisco routers are more expensive but you can get monitoring and management software with them that are more suitable for business applications.

I betcha skuzzy knows a thing or two about small business routers :)
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Cisco 2600 series is a good solid product and well suited for T1 applications.  You will not find a better router for a couple of T1's.

The 1700 series from Cisco is ok.  A bit slow, but they work.

We use Sonicwalls at work as our gateway/router.

One nice thing was last week - the power brick died and took out the router. Even though it was out of warranty they replaced the power brick AND router free of charge as the power brick was a known problem :)

Check them out at http://www.sonicwall.com

Our main one is a TZW (includes wireless), the one we use for the DMZ is a PRO 100.

They can't be bad, they have US government approval.

For internal routers I would definately recommend Cisco thoguh.

Well I appreciate the information guys. I did a firmware update on the router and it really hasn't cured the internet connection drops and time outs. With only 4 people in our office connecting at once we shouldn't be having this trouble. Of course the ISP says it isn't them and the hardware people say it isn't them so it must be us...

Anyway I am getting some prices on the 2600 series routers from Cisco and the one that Kev recommended also.
