Trouble in Safe Mode
« on: February 18, 2005, 12:08:39 AM »
Lately something has been wrong with my computer while in safe mode. I boot in safe mode, i get the prompt asking me if I want to continue to run in safe mode, I say yes and it continues. after about 2-3 minutes the prompt I get when first starting up in safe mode comes back for 1-2 seconds then disappears (without me clicking anything) and the screen goes black (except for the cursor and all the stuff around edges of screen saying its in safe mode) and freezes.
and because of short duration of it actually working in safe mode, I havent had time to locate/delete anything I was looking for so I havent caused this by deleting anything

check your fans Rap ..it could be dieing cause of heat .. or another component is failing  VC perhaps ???

if you have access to another pc take the hard drive and slave it up .. then go thru it and get rid of your bug .. (as per your last email)

Freezinh in safemode with mouse still working?
I think if PC freeze due to hardware error, you would not see a mooving mouse cursor.
If it freeze due to hardware errors, that need drivers, it should not hapend in safe mode.

Maybe some core system files are corrupt?

I would try to run chkdsk to try to find errors on the hard disk.

If you cant run chkdsk from that pc, do it as slave or make a bootalbe CD.

As a last resort one could try to do a repair install of XP.
Boot the computer with the XP disk, but in stead of makeing a new install, run the repair install thing. My friend did that once and avoided a complete reinstall that way :)

Sounds like the shell has been corrupted.  There are some spyware programs that replace the shell so they can run all the time.  It could be this.
If the above is the case, you will be looking at a reinstalltion of the operating system, as there is no way to find out what the offending process named the original shell.
I recently had to deal a friends computer which had the same exact problem.
