Yeah, I don't get it.  As far as acronyms go, it's not that clever, and I'll back that up in a second.  In regards to the cars, they seem pretty reliable, nice cars.  A friend of mine had a Sonata for a few months while his girlfriend was on deployment, and he was surprised at the quality.

Back to the acronyms, there are ever so much better ones:

Toyota=Too Often Yankees Overprice This Auto
Chevrolet=Car Has Extensive Valve Rattle On Long, Extended Trips
Ford=Fraternal Order of Restored Desotos.
Pontiac=Poor Old Nut Thinks It's A Cadillac.

Anyone can use stupid cell phone shorthand to make a sentence out of anything, it takes skills to do it in ENGLISH.

I wish more people would buy those little tin cans.  They're no threat at all.  The last time I was in a crash with a tin can import, I plowed through the front half of that little go-kart Honda like a knife through butter.

These big SUV's, on the other hand, pose a real threat.

Sorry for offending those who own HYUNDAIs. believe it or not (i just reseached lol), korean cars these days are like Soviet Tanks... cheap, reliable, less complicated sophisticated parts (lots of inexpensive parts are goooood). HYUNDAI kinda mirrors HONDAs and TOYOTAs 10 yrs ago...

Picked my wife up a brand new 2001 Santa Fe. back in..well 2001.
Before I complain about it something has got to go wrong with it. Or have seomething to complain about
so far nothing has.and there isnt.
Runs great. Rides nice ,good on gas,great visability,Handles like a dream.
Wife totally loves it (she even friggen named the damn thing LOL)
the only thing "I" would have a complaint with if you can call it that. Is the speakers sound a little tinny for my tastes. But from what I understand they even fixed that.

I don't drive an SUV.  SUV's are for people with an image problem since they're nothing more than jacked-up station wagons.  If you're curious, I drive a Buick Roadmaster sedan.  

I don't like running over small cars, but traffic crashes have a way of finding me.  I drove a Cadillac until that Honda pulled out in front of me.  I walked away fine but the car wound up in a junkyard.  Better it than me.

Depends on the SUV, and in NZ most people drive SUVs (refered to her as 4WD's) because of the accesability of beachs, mountains, snow, places not necessarily "off road" junkie spots, but where that 4WD kicks in nicely.

Most of the 4WD's here are not the americanised wannabe crap (although we are seeing more of them). IE, they aren't full time 4WD, they have hi/lo gear ratios, they usually have centre-diffs.

Back to Hyundai, over here we call the Hi-and-dry, cos thats where the leave you, hi-and-dry without a working vehicle.

(oh and I drive an Isuzu, I think they sell as GMC Troopers in the US)

I think it's possible that you've overgeneralized slightly.  We've had SUVs because my wife carries our kids, plus three that she ferries around occasionally, with great control authority on snow, ice, and mud.  Plus, we enjoy going out into the wilderness where clearance, 4WD, and weight for traction come in handy.

I think it's very possible that many SUV owners have the image problems you ascribe, but not all.

Hyundai and Kia both suffer from the reputation they developed, and deserved, in the late 80's and early 90's. Since the turn of the century, they have produced a product that is on par with, and cheaper, than most of the major automakers. Public perception is what is holding them back. The resale value of a Korean auto is among the worst in the world because of that reputation. Give them about another five years of quality and value and they will begin to take the place that Honda and Toyota did in the late 80's. They are making some nice cars that can be had pretty cheap for what they are.

Another carmaker to watch out for is GM. They have made a commitment to make a better product, and they are following through with it. The fit and finish of the new cars they are coming out with is far above what the competition is offering in the same price bracket. The first year production models have had very few problems, and major consumer advocate groups are placing them on their 'best buy' lists.

A car company can dig itself out of its own hole. Time and word of mouth will work wonders. If you've never considered any of these brands, take the time to test em out the next time you go looking.
