What we are talking about here is not "changing the gauge size", but "retaining the traditional gauge size". The concern is that the new, smaller gauge size on the Frank and the 38s will be extended to the whole lineup.
I don't think people had a problem with gauge size as it was prior to the above 2 new planes. Anyway, I didn't.
Looking at them again, it's not just the overall size, but the size of the markings and needle, plus reflections off the glass. They are pretty, but I would vote against going any farther in that direction, due to the readability issue. The 38 gauges seem to be incrementally less readable than the Frank's, to my eye.
Also, Fruda, as people get older, more and more body parts get "****ed up", as you put it. Getting glasses only works up to a point. Also, the ability to focus at different distances gradually goes away, and glasses don't help much with this (not even bifocals). You may well experience this phenomenon when you get past 50... :-)
