Boroda,
Was there a similar feeling in USSR after the '72 basketball win?
Sorry, I was born in 1972 and don't remember how it was...
For Soviet people the greatest moment in sports history was 1972 hockey series, when Canadians thought they'll easily beat Russian barbarians

USSR won the Canadian part, and Canadians won in Moscow. Soviet team was too delighted about beating NHL team in Canada that they thought on European (larger) hockey arena there will be no problem, but they underestimated Canadians.

I don't remember 1980 Olympics "miracle", I watched some games on TV but missed the final

Another great moment was when USSR won Canada Cup in 81. And then Canadians stole our prize!

Hehe, at school our teacher asks us: "Kids, today is a great day, can anyone tell me what is so great abou it?", and one kid gets up and says: "Yesterday Soviet team won the Canada Cup!", and teacher answers: "No, you are wrong! Today it's Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev's 75th birthday!"
