Anyone ever flown LIAT? or on a De Havilland Dash 8 Turboprop
« on: February 22, 2005, 08:17:18 PM »
Going on honeymoon in June LIAT airlines in the Carribbean has the flight from San Juan to Tortola that best suits my Delta Itinerary.  Just wondering how reliable/safe they are.  The plane would be a De Havilland Dash 8 Turboprop.

I have taken that trip about 6 times.
But I was on American airlines usually a 767 and then a American
Oh I forget the full name but it's the American that uses the twin engine turbo props planes to take the 30min 60mile flight from SanJaun to Tortola's Beef Island airport.

I would check for any crash reports and or the airlines safety record.
They should both be public knowledge.

Have a good time and please go to Pusser's and get a #4 pain killer LOL.
But only after you are done with your day.

If you dive I will recomend Dive BVI.

Only DeHavilland I've ever been in, I was the copilot ....a Vampire!  Envision a P-38 with a jet engine down the middle.  Not the prettiest of fighters, but nifty

Turbo-props are loud but don't fly very high so if you crash you won't fall very far.

mrb is thinking of Atr 42's and 72's. The Dash 8 is about the size of the 42, and safe as you'd expect. If it helps they have P&W engines, which are widely used and reliable. Well, if you put the fuel nozzles in right,  they won't catch on fire over Lake Michigan. If they are not, it makes for a interesting and very short flight as I recall. They pry have someone like Animals cousin doing contract mtx on them so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Plus, if it does start on fire there is alot of water around there so if it burns through the flight controls and forces a ditch, it should go out quickly.

Yeah, I've ridden in a few Dash 8s when flying between Portland and Spokane.  They're fun for a short ride.

Never been on a Dash 8, but I've shared the pattern with several.   Things look bloody ginormous from a Cessna 152 when you're taxiing.

flew on a dash 8 , miami to tampa, small, noisy, but not bad for a short flight, we flew low enough so you get to see more than from a big jet.

Used to be based in San Juan with American eagle.  Flew to tortola many times in ATR 42's.  Have also ridden on dash 8 several times.  Should be a great flight.  Dash 8 is a high wing aircraft to you get a good view of what your flying over.  Dash 8 also has real good short field takeoff and landing capabilities, requires very little runway which is good since tortola's runway is only 3600 feet long.

100 PIC LIAT's down in Santo Domingo - solid frame. Very much true when it comes to the time tables.

Wouldn't worry too much.
