CV arrestor wires
« on: February 25, 2005, 09:13:55 AM »
Okee... so last night I was going to land my damaged seafire on the cv.  I came in a little high, but I had my throttle at 0%, touched down and managed to catch the last possible wire.  My speed was just about 100 when I came down on it, and when I hit, the hook caught the nose hit the deck of the carrier, then I was catapulted off the back.  I then voiced my discontent on squad vox, and found out that it is a well known fact (apparently to everyone but me) that when you catch this last wire, it is certain death no matter the circumstances.

Has anyone else on the board heard similar accounts, and if so, is there anything being done about it from a bug standpoint?

Thanks.

You just have to hit the brakes right after touch down ;)

But just it really was not really so easy in real life either...

Well, I was coming in a little high and I knew it, but I was pretty beat up, so I thought I was doing good.  Had a successful landing not 10 min. before that doing exactly the same thing.  I remember looking to the side and seeing the wires pass by, and thinking:  "If I catch one of these I'm going to be lucky".  Well it caught, and it just destroyed the plane and catapulted my fiery corpse overboard.

Like I said, some folks were saying this happens consistently with that last wire... sounded to similar to be a coincidence.

As for it not being easy in real life, I look forward to watching that vid when I get home from work, but if this was a real life ship, I don't think they'd have a death trap set up for the silly n00bs who can't seem to land on the first 11 wires =P

"Hey Billy Bob, one of these times one of those boys is gonna catch that last wire, and when they do... YEEEHAAAWW its gonna be a real holler of a good time!"   :p

hehe, last wire is there only to throw you back in the water.  When landing on a CV dont use the hook.  Come in slow with your gear up.  The CV crew will hate you, but you get to land.

you can judge it just right so you stop dead as you touch your wheels down even without the hook.

just come in at stall point and pancake the last few feet onto the deck.

always make sure your throttle is cut and brakes on.

only planes (including bombers) i cant land on a CV are the 262 and the ar234s
And I don't know much, but I do know this. With a golden heart comes a rebel fist.

Turn auto takeoff on.
Roll down runway full throtle in any aircraft.
close to end kill throtle and let plane roll off deck and belly land on water.
Soon the cv will move up and begin to push your aircraft through the water. Enjoy the ride.

Hey How,

You mean the first wire, or the farthest one on the back of the boat, right?

I know if I am close to catching the first wire I need to hammer the throttle to full to hold myself from getting flung off the back.  Then I release the hook, chop the throttle and exit or rearm.

Like mechanic said, I usually come in at a shallow angle, full flaps, near the stall envelope, about 95-100 mph, and as I'm about to cross over the end of the deck, chop throttle to zero and flare (nose up and float down).  I plant all three wheels without rolling. This is possible in most planes, even without hooks, except for heavy multi engine birds where you'll have to hit the brakes as you touch down, but even then I'm usually stopped before I get to the tower.

The carriers in AH are running at flanking speed at all times (something like 30 knots), so it tends to make landing pretty easy if it's not turning.

Mars, I guess I should probably be a little more clear on what I mean because it depends on how you are looking at it  =).  The one I'm referring to is:  If you are on approach, the first wire would be the one closest to the back of the carrier or the first one you could catch.  The one I mean is the last possible cable you could catch, or the one closest to the front of the boat.

This is the only time I've ever caught this cable, and from what I hear, everytime you catch this cable it will destroy your plane, kill you, then fling the wreckage in the water.     Despite its efficiency, this thing really doesn't have much going for it  =)

BTW, this is really the only problem I've ever had with landing on the CV.  Just a neat way to lose 5 kills  :(

I make squaddies sit in the CV & call my approach. Had a few occasions (running for my life in a broken plane) where I probably woulda crashed without them to call it for me.

LOL,

Rgr that, thanks for the clarification.  I guess I have never caught that one cause I didn't know that one would throw you all the way off the back of the carrier too.

Bwhahahahahaha I would never trust one of my squaddies to do this for me.  I can see it now:

nah you're too high
still too high
just a little lower
Ok, now you are good, keep it right there...
WHAM!!!!!

Then the only sound that I would hear would be the sounds of laughter as my greasy puddle slides down the back of the cv deck into the water as races my wreckage to the bottom.   :aok

Check your throttle calibration. If its at 1% and the hook is down you'll go off the back. Oddly enough this will happen even if you started just sittin on the deck w/o landing and winding up all that tension in the cable. Try upping on the CV, lowering hook and throttling to 1%, easiest way to fly backwords.
