If your speaker setup in your sound control panel can be set to a 7.1 speaker configuration, DirectSound will get the sounds to the right places. No encoding or decoding is required.

XP seemed to pick up the change  in my sound system automatically.   I went to control panel to make the changes and the 7.1 surround was already selected as opposed to the original desk top speaker option.

Skuzzy, you think I'm set then?

Thanks everyone for  your help.

Bah, I was thinking of EAX reverb. Yeah Direct Sound 3D is 3D, but it's nowhere close to EAX.

Howdy steve,
I wouldn't say I needed it as I am using my AC'97 onboard sound but I wouldn't mind trying an actual souncard in my system as everyone says that onboard sound sux unless you have an Nvidia chipset. I am certainly interested
but if someone else really needs it I'm fine with what I have.

KB, how about this: Unless someone expresses a real need, we'll judge together, it's yours.  Can you pick up the shipping?

Howdy Steve,
Sounds fair to me. Let it ride a bit and see what comes. I'm consistantly amazed at the generousity of people on this board. One of the more positive attributes of this community. Thanks again and we can exchange info at any point that seems appropriate. I have PayPal so that should make it pretty painless. Cya up!

Reading through again, I'll pass.  No one should have to play ANY game with AC 97 onboard sound.

Good of you to offer Steve.

Dolby offers 7.1 surround sound.  Does DTS offer the same?

Also, I thought Aces High did use EAX.  If not, then what is the difference between EAX and DIRECT 3D?

I got a 5.1 going right now.  I hear everything fine.  For those that have the instant snap view systems enabled, try pressing F7 while in flight and that will have a gradual pan view instead.

Eax just adds "ambience" and crap to sound. Least all that I've heard. I don't use it... you end up getting vox transmisisions that sound like you;re in a concert hall...lol Maybe it's changed or "devoloped" since the last i heard it.

The AH system takes a mono source and posistions its sound source as to where the sound is coming from. Hence, when in the tower, and a plane flys by - you hear the sound emiiting from the planes location in time.

I also have an unused Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 with the original installation CD,  if any one else is in dire need of a sound card as opposed to using their onboard sound.  All that is required is to pickup the shipping.

Yo Steve!
                Tawk ta me. Wassup!

On another note, I have been reading up on the Audigy Gamer and it seems there are issues with VIA chipsets for some at least. I have a Gigabyte GA7 VAX with KT400a chipset. Anyone with any experiences to relate? I already got the latest drivers from Creative and I'm aware that I should only load the drivers and not  any other part of their suite. Anything else I should be aware of?
