« on: February 26, 2005, 02:25:21 AM »
Ok i am interested in building a barebone system, and dont realy know wat all i need this is th elist i have so far:

Case
Power Supply
Processor
HDD
Floppy
CD rom
Mother Board
Fans for cooling
All Connections

(this is not specific yet)

and that is the list that came off the top of my head, so my main question is, what stuff am i missing, and like, how to build it, i know basically how to put it together, but i mean are there specific things that need to be done before i power it on, besides connecting all the cables and makeing sure it is all assembled right?  thx for any help

The easy way to get started here is to pick a good reputable source.

http://www.mwave.com, newegg, etc.

Pick a motherboard combo. Typicly you can start with a motherboard & work from there. Or start with a cpu.

Typical motherboard combo will include
Board, CPU, Ram, CPU cooling fan.
The nice part is they won't let you build a system that isn't compatable.

Mwave has a 9$ option to assemble & test before they ship it. This is WAY worth it to a builder.  You know when it arrives that it was setup & working. All you have to do is drop it into your box & make connections.

You may want to research different boards your interested in. Time spent here really pays off later.

Case is easy, there are many, just get one with decent cooling & enough Power supply  to run your system.

HDD depends on what you like and what you want.

Lots of guys are going with SATA drives.
Some still prefer IDE.  Personally I'm a Western Digital fan, and tend to prefer their drives. I've got a pair of 80 Gig 8mb buffer drives that I've been very happy with.

CDRom, dvd, floppy's, can be found at any reputable dealer either online or local.  If your looking for a burner I'd suggest a Liteon DVD burner. Prices have dropped dramaticly recently and btw they burn CD's too.

Make notes, take the time to do the research. Its a learning process, and can be enjoyable.  Read reviews before you buy.

Building a system is a balancing act.
Budget vs performance vs ease of build.

It can be a bit terrifying, it can also be the most fun you can have short of sex.

Take your time, read the manual that comes with the Mboard.  Ohhh and good luck.  :)

I just built a PC for my Son.  I had to make a few extra trips to the local compter store getting things I forgot.  Here are a few things to remember to get:

CPU Fan -  if it does not come with one.
RAM
Sound Card - if not built into MB
Video Card
Lan Card or Modem - if not built in
Operating System (Win XP)
Surge Suppressor
Keyboard - Mouse - Monitor - speakers

I let my 12 year old son put his PC together, but here are a few things I watched close, or I did for him:

Static Discharge - Always discharge and static before touching anything by touching the case or get a static discharge wristband.   If it's your first build, get a wristband.

Make sure the heatsink is properly placed on the CPU.  The heatsink needs to have good contact with the chip.

Make sure the flat cable on the floppy drive is plugged in the right way.  For some reason, they make a lot of cables without the notch that will only allow it to be plugged in one way.  If you get this in wrong once, you can toss your floppy.

Good luck,

Artic Silver properly applied between CPU and Heatsink.

Round IDE cables are nice for airflow.

Suggest odering OEM copy of XP and any other software you may want along with hardware.

Make sure the power Supply is of good quality such as Antec and a minimum of 480W.

Case with 120mm fans will be quieter.

If you need an OS DONT get the Full version of XP

Just get the Upgrade

Full version of XP Pro can cost up to $300

You can get the upgrade at some places fro under $150 (got mine for $99)

And they do the same thing.
You still get WinXP  OS with the upgrade you just not paying as much for it.

Works fine for me

then you can have an extra $150 to use on other goodies. Memory, Vid card etc

Newegg sells the OEM version of XP (which is a full install) for anywhere from 89 to 150 bucks.  I've seen it at several price points in between those marks (89 bucks is what they sell the upgrade version of XP Home for retail).

when you put the thermal paste on the CPU make sure its a VERY thin layer. To much paste will cause heat issues as the paste will actually hold the heat rather than dissapate it.Power cables have a red stripe on them. The red stripe goes into the board on pin 1.It will be marked. The strip goes into the HDD Floppy CD ROM with the red stripe next to the power plug. Most ribbons are fixed with a notch that only allows insertion in one slot.Just a heads up if they dont.

You do get a full install with Upgrade.

I was gonna buy the full version. then I was gonna buy the OEM version. thent he guy that sold me the parts told me he could sell me the OEM version if I really wanted that but I should just go with the upgrade version because it installs the same exact thing at a lesser price. in this case it was a $50 difference between the OEM ($150 for XP Pro OEM) and the Upgrade versions. And I got XP Pro upgrade with SP2 for $99

Ok I lied. $51 LOL

Drediock the upgrade option is under the assumption that he actually owns something to upgrade from..

If he lost his installation media and/or manuals he might not be able to do an upgrade at all.

All you need to do a full install of Win XP with the upgrade version is a Windows 95,98,etc installation disk.
It doesnt even have to be installed on the computer. you just have to have one to insert into the disk drive when it prompts you to.

If he doesnt have one he can let me know. I have 2 or 3 extras laying around. I'll mail him one for free.
