Upgrading from 98se to XP
« on: March 03, 2005, 04:14:23 AM »
Question.......

Thought i saw on this board a reference to using the upgrade version of XP over the full version.

That bascially they were the same except for cost.

And that using the upgrade version with a boot from the cd on a clean/formatted c drive would work if you supplied your old version w98se cd when XP asked for it?????

Any input on this would be appreciated.

Yes you are better off doing a clean install in place of a upgrade, and yes you can do it for a clean disk as long as you have the older version CD if possible use XP pro in place of the Home version as Pro has better network support

Can you get a copy of XP Pro as an upgrade rather then a full install?

Will it still do the install on a clean drive with proof of old W98SE cd?

Yes on both counts.

Advise you either get a copy online or

Find a local small  mom and pop owned and operated computer shop as opposed to Best Buy/Comp USA and see how much you can get it for cash.

Often you can get many of the parts and stuff at these little shops for close to the same price you can find online with the added benifit of not having to pay shipping  and not having to wait for them to get shipped to you.

Always ask how much they will sell for cash.
