Would someone from Germany point me in the direction of some traditional (WW2 preferable) drinking songs?  Thanks.

Ein prosit der Gemutlichkeit!

eins, zwei, g'suffe!

A toast to happiness.

Not much of a "song," but the Hofbrauhaus went nuts in Munich.  You should've seen the Japanese group, they were trashed beyond all recognition. :D

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
     who was very rarely stable.
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
who could think you under the table.
David Hume could out consume
     Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel,
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
who was just as sloshed as Schlegel.

There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach ya
'bout the raisin' of the wrist.
Socrates himself was permanently pissed.

John Stuart Mill, of his own free will,
after half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.
Plato, they say, could stick it away,
'alf a crate of whiskey every day!
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle,
and Hobbes was fond of his Dram.
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart:
     "I drink, therefore I am."

Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed;
A lovely little thinker, but a bugger when he's pissed.

Not very German...but there are lots of Germans in it.

Furious, I'm not from Deutschland, but here is my favorite:

IN MUNCHEN STEHT EIN HOFBRAUHAUS (circa 1936)
In Munchen steht ein Hofbrauhaus
Eins, zwei, g'suffa!
Da lauft so manches Fasschen aus,
Eins, zwei, g'suffa!
Da hat schon mancher brave Mann,
Eins, zwei, g'suffa!
Gezeigh, was er so verlragen kann!
Schon fruh am Morgen fing er an,
Und spat am Abend kam er heraus.
So schon ist's im Hofbrauhaus'
Ein Prosit, ein Prosit der Gemutlichkeit,
Ein Prosit, ein Prosit der Gemutlichkeit!

This 'un is great when played by the Oompah-pah band and sung by the entire hall. The chorus is "One, Two, DRINK" and you have to follow instructions to the letter in Germany.

THATS it Seagoon, thanks :)

I couldn't find the full version in my 10 second google.  It was a glorious occasion to see so much alcohol consumed at once.... ahh I wish I were in Munich right now.

In Munich is the Hofbrauhaus--
One, two, drink up!!
Where the kegs are everflowing
One, two, drink up!!!
There is always some brave man,
One, two, drink up!!!
Who wants to show how much he can drink:
You find him starting early in the morning,
and coming out late in the evening--
Ah the beautiful Hofbrauhaus!

Kinda like that.. :)
it's close to impossible to translate, like most songs I guess. Also the lyrics are bavarian, a german accent, which isn't easy to understand even for germans from further north.

HA! I remember hearing that song when I was a kid.

One of the benifits of being a mutt is you get to experiance at least an introduction to sorts of different cultures.

In my case.

German, Spanish (from spain)  Irish,English ,Hungarian Slovak, and Prussian
Death is no easy answer
For those who wish to know
Ask those who have been before you
What fate the future holds
It ain't pretty

My German is sehr schlecht and very rusty, but Redwing's translation looked spot on.

Last two lines are:
"A Toast, a toast to warm camaraderie!"

Here's a bizarre question I've never gotten an answer to. I've always heard that the hymn, "A Mighty Fortress" by Luther is set to the tune of a German drinking song. What's the song?

Anyone know how to play the card game 'scat' (hehehehehehe) which all the LW pilots write about in their autobiogaphies?  It seems it was as much  a part of their daily life as breakfast was

That's news to me too Seagoon. I just googled it in german and found out that "A mighty fortress is our god" seems to have been based on a well known bar-tune. Luther just replaced the lyrics with christian ones.
I had no luck in finding the original lyrics though. Considering that these would have to be over 500 years old that's probably not that much of a surprise though.

bunch, the game is "skat". Traditional german cards game, originating in the late 18th, early 19th century (I think).

It's a three-handed trick taking game. It is quite often played by four people, but there are always only 3 active players in each hand; the dealer sits out. Each active player is dealt 10 cards and the remaining two form the skat. Each hand begins with an auction. The winner of the bidding becomes the declarer, and plays alone against the other two players in partnership. The declarer has the right to use the two skat cards to make a better hand, and to choose the trump suit.
Some cards have point values, and the total number of card points in the pack is 120. To win, the declarer has to take at least 61 card points in tricks plus skat; the opponents win if their combined tricks contain at least 60 card points. Instead of naming a trump suit the declarer can choose to play Grand (jacks are the only trumps) or Null (no trumps and the declarer's object is to lose all the tricks).
