Reminiscing
« on: March 05, 2005, 07:50:53 AM »
Was reading posts in another thread and started reminiscing about the $6.00 an hour days of AW.  30 planes in the arena.  Always seeing the same guys everyday.  HT in his F4U spanking us with his E knowledge.  Korean war nights where augering in happened at an alarming rate (remember you could hear the explosion anywhere in the arena).  And the CC bills!  My God, I flew that much?!

And after all these years of flying the various incarnations of this game I still make the same dumb mistakes in flying judgment.

Sorry in advance if this topic has been used recently.  Forgot to search first.

Can still see my first kill like it was yesterday, and that was about 15 years ago.

I've got no idea who or what my "first kill" was.. but I do remember cherry-picking some "name" in a furball about 3 months after I had started playing... and thinking that meant I had "made it"   lol.

My first kills came in WB 2.xx. I had been practising quite a lot in offline mode before going online so on my first sorties I racked up several kills. Couldn't go past 2 kills per sortie though, ammo ran out usually before that.

That was totally contrary to my first flight with AH1. I thought I knew something coming from WB but all I got was wasted rotten. The FM was so different that I had no chance to survive when bounced (with the old E skimming FM). I was just trying to hang in the sky untill my stick died after 2 days and I lost my free time before I could get another.

Had to try it again, it was challenging and never looked back after that.

WB 2 something.  It took me two days worth of flying. Killed a jug on a front quarter pass.

My CC bill usually ran about 80 a month.

I also remember having a black dot on my six instead of an airplane. It was like fighting a flake of pepper in a world of 45 degree angles.

Wow how things change. We will need G-suits next :)

Yeah, me too, just except that it was 8 years ago, not 15.

That bastid moggy came out of nowhere, I have no idea how he snuck up on me. There I am, cruising and rubbernecking. Boom, straight to red screen.

Oh, wait, I bet you're saying the first time you killed somebody :)

culero (for me, that came a LONG time later ;))

My first kill was in Microsoft Flight Simulator - the original one on the original PC.  Man, I thought those enemy planes (equal signs with line thru them) were frightening!  They were always coming at you head on.....Everything on the screen was gray and black....the periods your own guns fired for bullets.....Think how far it's come in the last 20+ years!  What's it gonna be like in 2025?!  We'll proabably be sitting in a fully holographic stereo surround sound room with hyrdraulics and vibrating chairs, electrodes hooked to your nads to give you a shot of pain (realism!) when you get shot......I can hardly wait!!!!!:p

I don't remember my first kill.

But, I do remember my first kill on a "big name"

It was Rude. However, I cherry-picked him. But hey, it was still a kill. :)

My first flight in AW I took up a hog and headed south into Cz land and met an F6 at about 8k.  We went around for a bit and then he blasted me at an angle I didn't think he even was facing me from (this was my introduction to AW lag lol).  The next hop I went right back, having realized what had occurred, and proceded to wax the guy that time.  Can't rememeber who it was, but I'll never forget the rush of getting my first kill.
