Did you know that the Germans in WWI complained because the Americans were using pump shotguns in the trenches. This would be the same Germans that were using mustard gas. I'll bet the shotguns were very effective in the narrow trenches.

I have a story that involves trench warfare.

When I was in the marine infantry we were training on trench clearing. We had the range to ourselves .. just our company.

So we go about aproaching the trench and clearing it and all that. Then some smart guy says  It does not help us to learn if there is no one in the trench.

SO Capt puts me and another guy in the trench with a SAW smoke grenades and smoker/practice rounds for my 203  and a bullhorn.

Now the guys are approaching the trench, we open up on them with the SAW and grenades (blanks in the SAW of course). They do not have any real lines of fire on us to set up cover and no acces to the company 60mm mortars.

My buddy and I are having a ball throwing smoke greandes and firing off rounds and screaming abuse at them over the bullhorn. The entire time some Lt. is trying to get them to move forward. With the Capt. acting as referee telling guuys they are dead and handing out extra duty for the guys who get  "killed".

This goes on for like half an hour. Finally the captain decides enough. So I guess he was yelling at us to let em in. and retreat to the next line so the could clear the trench. We were so loud we could not here him.

So Capt saunters over and pitches a grenade into our trench. We figure it is a smoker, no big deal.  We had actaully taken the time to dig a grenade  sump in the trench.

Capt pulled  the pin and pitched it  I reach down to get it and throw it back, my buddy tries to kick it into the sump. I stop trying to pick it up and start kicking at it, just as he reaches down for it. Then I reach for it also .... POOF greande goes off.  One leeeeetle problem!.....

It was a CS grenade  (teargas)

BAM we both get a bunch of that  CS powder in our face and eyes.   We reach for our masks but as we had the powder in our eyes they did no good.

Now for those of you that have gone into the gas house to practice  gas drills  I will tell you . This was so much worse I had crap just running out of my nose and eyes  spit pouring out my mouth. corpsman poured water over us trying to help.... heh that just made it worse.   ****e even my camies turned a different color.  I was out of commision for like 3 hours. That sucked.

Any way some guy gets to our trench while we are laying there  gagging and acts like he owned us or something. then just laughed at our misery.

not a great story but well .......

Ok I will go away now:)

That's a great story Aubrey! They actually tossed tear gas at you?!
Then how old are you?! Was that a training in 1917? :D

(j/k that sounded really harsh!)

oh the gas hut. I know it well.
one guy in basic was imune to CS. It did nothing to him. I dont know if it was coincidental, but he was the stupidest man I have ever met too.

Gas house. Nasty smelly and most of all painful.

BTW the trench guns were 1897 Winchesters with exposed hammers. They still had a few in the MP inventory at Ft. McClellan in 1976.

Later models were Mossbergs and they did have a boyonet lug on them. The Germans were upset as the ammunition used plain lead shot of course.

DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."
