Again, that depends on the plane.

The Nikki does this well vertically.

The 109 wants a bit more angle, and wants to go left better than right.

The stang seems to go either way, as does the Hawg.

You get the idea. The respective experts in each craft can tell you the finer points, but this is how it is generally done.

I only do #4 when I'm going the wrong way, and need to reverse.  I'll wait until lateral separation is at 3000m+ (d3.0), then do a hammerhead, followed by a reversal via a steep dive to regain speed.  As for the oncoming con, I try to keep it in the middle of my up view while diving at merge, giving the con a poor shot opportunity.
