Ever look at your bulk mail? :)
« on: March 11, 2005, 06:15:28 AM »
I was screwing around this morning and decided to check out my bulk mail just for kicks.
To start with it appears than I have a great chance at winning the Euro lotto. LOL
My personal assistance is very much required for numerous financial activities and transactions from folks in Nigeria. :)
I have won 3 DVD players, 2 computers, a bigscreen TV, 2 or 3 all expense paid vacations, 1 boat, 1 rod and reel, 1 fishfinder.
Then I had the one that couldn`t possibly be ignored that was entitled in bold, capitol letters "YOU REPLY ME NOW".
How could anyone resist that? :D

Every morning when I go into work, as I walk past the fax machine, i retrieve the stack of real estate and stock offers and toss them into the burn bin.

Even the fax machine is spammed.

last time i emptied it, yahoo bulk mail had 5892 messages.

didn't look at a one of them, though  mostly the same junk as last year i assume.

that was 1 week (5 days) of not emptying it. if i refresh the page, in less than 5 minutes i will have gotten 2-3 spam emails.
I don't know what to put here yet.

I've received 1 spam e-mail to my account so far. That is, during 8 years of internet use.

Even my hotmail spam account doesn't get spammed. Haven't emptied it for a year now and it has only 2 messages that could be categorized as spam - both from sites where I gave the spam account for registration.

What are you guys doing wrong to get 5000 spam mails?

well you know if you look at the message, there are bugs in the HTML that send a confirmation to the spammer that you actually opened and saw the message.

then they add you to the bigger list of known "good" email addy's

snowball from there

Actually that's why many e-mail proggies won't even open picturelinks etc. from e-mails without confirmation.

It's worse if you have a .com email address. My email used to be ***2000@yahoo.com , and the spam was pouring in on a daily basis. I had all Yahoo filters set targeting known sources, but it still wasn't enough.

Then Yahoo! announced that they were going to charge $20 to account holders to retrieve their email into Outlook via the POP3 server. So I created two ****@yahoo.co.uk email addresses. (No POP3 charges for those) Spam delivery went down immediately by about 98%.

I get those Africa things, but I have a Yahoo filter set up to detect anything with Africa in it, and dump it into a "possible spam" folder. I also filter out emails with the words "debt" and "medication" in the title. They go straight in the trash. Yahoo handles that by deleting it so that it doesn't even stay in the trash. It's gone. An asynchronous process that means these mails don't even tie up my router being retrieved.

Yeah, it's really labor intensive to just hit the "Empty" button on the bulk email folder.

That explains your avatar.
