Ground Targets
« on: March 11, 2005, 10:04:43 AM »
Hey PPL

I was wondering if there is any point in strafing ground targets other than tanks ect and gun emplacements

ie will cannons and MG's damage buildings in anyway

I have looked around the boards but cant see anything about it

Thanks

Mussie

Yeah guns will eventually destroy just about any structure... even a single .30 cal MG will eventually destroy a hangar, shore battery, etc.   it will just take awhile.  Currently objects don't have have a armor rating like tanks do, so anything that you can destroy with a bomb or rocket can be damaged by gunfire.  I won't even venture a guess as to what % of a 1000lb bomb one .50 cal bullet is but yes you will do damage.

Just to clarify what Soulyss posted, the small buildings/structures in the terrain (like the little red barns) can't be destroyed/damaged.  Structures on airfields, in ports, towns, etc can mostly be damaged/destroyed although not in all cases.  Strafing is not super effective with smaller calibre guns though so the results can be mixed.  A player in AH1 did a comparison of damage by calibre and converted to lb's equivalent and found something in the 12.7mm/.50cal class of weapon did about 1.1lb's of damage on average per hit.  So, small ground targets like fuel bunkers which take ~250lb's to destroy would be destroyable without too much effort but hangers tend to take several passes and lots of hits.  That said, in a pinch, of if you have larger calibre weapons, strafing can be quite effective.

Try looking here:

Link to aircraft firepower thread

It was all done for AH1, not sure anyone has done anything similar for AH2 but I'm also not sure anything has changed.
