Do you "live dangerously" or fly to live?
« Reply #15 on: February 22, 2001, 04:22:00 PM »
I think it depends on the plane you are flying. A Pony is unquestionably THE surving plane, for you have to extend and get speed (aka, RUN) in order to be able to get a kill.

A zeke turns turns turns but cant run. So a Zeke is almost always a 1-way tickets plane if you have more hostiles than friendlies in the area.

If a plane can outrun or outdive most other planes it will definetely have a "fly to live" kind of flying, if a plane's only chance is its turn characteristics it will most likely fly "dangerously".

I try to live as much as I can, but those bastiges keep jumping me when I try to escape

i see. if there is more than one, oh well. i
die more than i kill but i have loads of fun.
the only time i really try to live is on a
squadnight mission. other than that  fly till

Rip, I answered your question, and the only flying style(s) I referred to are my own.  I changed it to first person in case this wasn't clear enough.

All preaching aside, I do a little of both.  I love flying to live, but my itch for a good fight often jeopardizes that.

Let me just say that I usually start every mission with the intention of getting many kills and coming home to land them.

Sometimes I do, Sometimes I don't. Either way, I HATE being shot down.

Generally, the cautious approach results in my being bored, which leads immediately to the incautious approach.

Usually, this transition can be timed with a second hand, not a minute hand.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

S!

My flying style varies a lot during tour.It depends on the opposition met and my mood.Still orienting more on BnZ to get home more often than just crash and burn.

On score tours or dweeb tours, I almost always fly to kill.
I typically land for 1 of 3 reasons:
1. I'm out of ammo.
2. I'm out of targets.
3. My plane is too trashed to fight in.

Sometimes I head home when I am low on gas, but I usually take 100%, so that is rare.

Most of the time, I just fight to the death.

I fly to live, sure, but that doesn't stop me from going into situations where the odds are against me.

I.e for example when winging with Nath or kirin (both madmen), we're frequently facing three or four high cons - while we're in A8's.

I'll try to bug if the odds get worse than that, or I am on the deck scissoring to survive.

But if someone dives in to save my behind (like funked or gie did the other week), I won't abandon them.

I fly to live (when I take off   but since I fly spit 9 I don't go for hi alt - I just wait untill the alt monkey makes a dumb move...

When it's 1 vs 1 (or 1 vs 3 at the most) I try to keep on living but will fight untill I'm dead or they are.

When I run into a gangbang I try EXTRA HARD to survive. If I get back home alive it's like showing those 6+ gangbangers a well deserved finger :P
Note: this does not mean "gaming the game" by stick yanking - I leave that to the newbie who knows no better

When I take on buffs I'll try to get the alt to kill him while surviving - but if he's in position to bomb our base I'll go in with hair on fire

That's when I'm flying fighters - with Attack missions or buff runs I try to get the bombs on trgt no matter what.

btw, my hero is Ypsilon

I fly to live. I just doesn't work out that way most of the time. I finally get bored with trying to fly smart and end up in the middle of it with 4 guys on my ass.
