Broadband Users..What you don't know can cost you.
« on: March 14, 2005, 11:09:56 AM »
I am a RoadRunner Customer.  Had the basic Cable service until 3 mos. ago when RoadRunner offered a new "Premium" Service advertised as High Speed for Gamers.  I upgraded, got a new Modem from RoadRunner that could handle the increased upload and download speeds.  This costs approximately 30 dollars a month more.....figured it was worth it.

Called RoadRunner several times to confirm that I had the premium higher speed service.  They said I did.....I said I don't want to know if I'm being billed for it, I want to ensure that I am actually reaping the benefits of a higher then normal speed cable connection.  As always.....first line of defense of an ISP is a person or persons with IQs' just marginally higher then grapes.
After being passed around awhile......I finally got to speak with someone that actually knew what I was asking for.  He gave me an address   [url]www.aroundcinci.com/speedtest/   At this sight provided by Time Warner, I could test the upload and dload speeds im Mbps.  While reading they explained a file is sent and received (size I can't remember) to measure speed of connection.

Took the test several times...different times during the day and different days of the week. In essence I found out my Mpbs were slightly higher then DSL averaging from 2.5 Mbps to at most 3Mbps.

Had a repairman come out.....he checked and found that upload and dload were out spec.  Went to box....tried to boost one side found that if he did he'd end up shutting down Cable at the rest of the Complex.  So now it's turned over to Engineering and I've been told this should be resolved by Weds.

Moral of story......just because you're paying for Cable Service does not mean you are getting the performance you are paying for.  Whether it's basic, premium or HiSpeed check to see if you're getting the service you are being billed for.

Hajo, if you want a second opinion on the upload and download speeds, you can try here

http://www.pcpitstop.com

They offer several tests including upload and download bandwidth tests for your PC and free A/V scanning.  I've used them for years and have always been satisfied with their service and my security during their tests.

The problem is the increased bandwidth does not say anything about the latency or packet loss.
So while you can have great download and upload speed the con to ah2 can still be bad.

Broadband Users..What you don't know can cost you.

Try this link !  I have been using it for many years since I used an old 14.4 analog modem to the current broadband cable modems.  Using this site I have managed to get the best from my cable modem as well as the "node" that my modem is on, on the local "head end" of my local broadband ISP provider (Adelphia).  Not to mention to be able to talk with some knowledge to the "Techies" at Adelphia to correct any problem that may occur.  I've gained all of the little bit of knowledge I have so I can converse with a "Tech" on the 3rd & 4th tier of Customer Support Serice at Adelphia, rather than butting heads with the 1st Tech that comes online when calling for assistance. the link has much better tools to inform you of what may be wrong with your broadband problems.

Did the tests.  Seems my system is setup well.  My connection speed is 85% of what it should be.  Nothing more I can do on my end to get the speed I'm paying for.

As far as usage Road Runner reports only 20% of it's broadband is taken up.  So no problems in that area.  My problem is in the system at my building.

Broadband Users..What you don't know can cost you.

I wasn't just speaking of the "Speed Tests", check out the other utiliites and options "dslreports" has under the "Test & Tools" catagory for utilities like the drtcp  and dr ping plus you can monitor you line or see what the "routers" are doing on your connections.

Not trying to be invasive, but the forums have many smart people on there, and some probably in your area, that may be able to help you with you problem.
