ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistan on Saturday successfully test-fired a long-range, nuclear-capable ballistic missile, the latest in a series of such tests in one of the world's flash points.

"Today, we carried out a successful test-firing of the indigenously developed Shaheen II missile," a military official stated.

He said the missile could travel up to 2,000 km (1,200 miles) and carry all kinds of warheads.

A military statement said Pakistan had informed neighboring countries beforehand about the test -- a practice also observed by rival India, which regularly tests its own nuclear-capable missiles.

"The test was carried out to verify some of the refined parameters," a military statement said.

Nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India, which have fought three wars since their independence from British rule in 1947 and went to the brink of a fourth in 2002, regularly carry out missile tests despite warming relations in recent months.

Experts say India and Pakistan are thought to each have several dozen nuclear warheads that can be mounted on short- medium-and long-range missiles.

..well, at least if they annihilate each other in a nuclear firestorm that doesn't envelop the rest of the planet, maybe we'll get our tech jobs back.

Even if they only tossed a few nukes on eachother it would be a disaster for the rest of the world.

It's not if, it's when.

Those of you who favor nuclear proliferation for the smaller countries and can't see why the shouldn't have them are merely favoring sooner over later.

Wrong.

Lots of people think small states shouldn't have nukes but then if the big players like US and Russia etc got rid of theirs completely they'd have a better case to make to these smaller "rogue" states. Thats not supporting nuclear proliferation its called leading by example!

Hypocracy stinks and its hypocracy to hold onto nukes whilst telling others they can't have them.

I for one am anti nukes and anti hypocracy.

I suppose it would be better for the US to totally get rid of ours and expect places like NK to do the same.

Since the NK's have been so totally honest about their entire nuke program and all.

Then, you'd have a nuke free plant... except for possibly a few well-intentioned states with great records on freedom like...NK.

Sometimes I wonder.

You sure felt good about the mean ol USA holding those nutcase russians at bay with nukes during the cold war tho eh?   If somebody has to have nukes to keep the bad guys in check... who would you suggest?  some tiny little island that could be wiped out in about 15 minutes?

If India and Pakistan expended their whole nuke aresenals against each other, it would not be the end of the world.  Russia tested more than both combined, as did the US.

Toad, I believe you said we should arm Taiwan with some untraceable nukes in another thread...it seems to me then, you are a part of the "those".
