Mighty purty when she's sleeping.  :D

It's cute.

What did you name her, and I hope the missus is doing well.

The missus is busy buying new furniture, and she has started talking to me again. :)

I was hoping for twins.

Collecting parts now for a new custom build designed for 1000 yd shooting.

300yds no sweat will stay in the black, with match ammo it can be shot to 600 yrds pretty well, but they really need tweaking at that range to score reliably.

Stuff like receiver bedding, match trigger pull, unitized gas cylinder (secured to front band), medium weight match barrel,  national match sights (already installed by Marine Armorer at Camp Perry on this one).

For 1000 yrds, all that and more, including fiberglass stock, double or triple lug receiver attach, heavy match barrel cyrogenically stress relieved (stainless steel, 1 in 10" twist, 6 groove) and a couple other little things.

Fun project, and like any good firearm, it appreciates in value the longer you own it if you take reasonable care of it.

That's a lot of yards. I bet if you laid that many football fields end to end you could see it from outer space.

But you prolly couldn't hit 5hit from outer space.

And uh... I'm leaving now.

Excuse the ignorance,

Is that an M1 Garand?

Close, it is the offspring.  It is an M1A, the semi-auto only version of the M14.

The M14 was the follow on to the Garand design, incorporatiing an improved gas system and detachable 20 round magazine, chambered in .308 instead of 30-06,  Some parts are interchangable.

who told you that the gas system was "improved" over the Garrand?

The Garrand takes it's gas from nearer to the muzzle and is a more accurate weapon..

Removable magazines was the big improvement.   Not sure that a .308 is much of an improvement over an ought six either except for bulk.

I remember the M14 as the service rifle my dad would bring home for marksmanship competitions in the Army reserves.  I always thought about getting an accurized version but never have.  Instead I have an AR15 for DCM matches, but never have fired it in one yet.  Just haven't found (or made) the time.

The AR15 can shoot about 200K rounds before you need to replace the barrel, while the M1/M1A/M14's can only shoot about 5K.  The AR15 ammunition is less expensive too.  However, for 600m shooting, the M1 (30-06) or M1A (7.62 NATO) outclass the AR15's 5.56 NATO round, imo.  The M1/M1A still dominates the DCM matches from what I have seen.

That's a cool rifle!

Regards,

Malta

It's a Pre-Ban M1A, built in 89, only had 200 rounds through it.

Will post better picture when I am home again.

AR15s are predominate rifle at service matches now.  For the long range shooting the M1A is still strong competitor, for actual combat M1A far exceeds the AR15 at long range due to greater energy at impact.

Oh yeah, M1A barrel can shoot a lot more than 5K, but serious hardcore match shooters would change between 5 and 10k.  So would AR15 shooters.

So does it have a bayonet lug and flash suppressor?

Are they making "post-ban" M1A's now for those of us that might be interested in getting one?

Yup, has bayonet lug and flash suppressor.  And yes, the new ones are being built that way.

Send me a PM if you are interested in buying one and I can give you a few ideas about what you might want to consider.  There are things to look for, and things to avoid (including Indian surplus ammo).
