Can anyone give me a couple of tips as to upgrading these drivers?

I'm an nvidia guy myself and have never updated the ATI drivers.  Anything I should watch for or do differently than the Nvidas?

Pretty straight forward, depending on what your current version is.

For that card, I would use the Catalyst 4.12 drivers.  The 5.x drivers re-introduced a very old ATI bug which causes the radar dots on the clipboard to always be black.

Just avoid the Catalyst Control Center at all costs.  Use the ATI Control Panel instead.  Your computer will thank you.

1)  Download the driver installation files from ATI's WEB site (http://www.ati.com).
2)  Use the Windows Add/Remove Programs ICON to remove the current ATI drivers and control panel (they usually have to be installed together as ATI keeps adding features to the control panel).
3)  After the reboot (you will be in VGA mode, dunt panic as it is ugly and slow), run the file you downloaded from ATI's WEB site and you should be good to go.

Instructions for proper install of video drivers.

Pick 1 driver:


Nvidea - http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

ATI - http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/....x=5&submit.y=4 - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

Omega tweaked drivers. Recommended by Nvidea and ATI - http://www.omegadrivers.net/main.php - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.


Now get this:
http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/ - Put it on your desktop


Now install DRIVER CLEANER


Go to add and remove programs and remove all references to ATI or Nvidea.

Restart in safe mode. Usually by clicking the f8 button during reboot.

DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING if windows asks.

.

Run DRIVER CLEANER, PICK APPROPRIATE DRIVER IN THE SCROLL DOWN WINDOW AND CLICK THE CLEAN button.



Then restart. DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING once again. It's ok, all will be well :)

When you reach your desktop click on the driver you downloaded and follow prompts.

Restart..

 

If you have any problems read the helpfile that comes with DRIVE CLEANER.

I have a question regarding this...when I uninstall the drivers, and after running driver cleaner, then boot back into Windows XP, XP automatically detects and installs 9800 drivers.  (Not VGA, 9800)  How do I prevent Windows XP Pro from automatically installing drivers when it detects new equipment?

It doesn't ask me to install, I get to the desktop, it says in a little dialog bubble in the lower right hand corner over the system tray that new hardware was detected, then roughly 3 seconds later it installs generic 9800 pro drivers and says something along the lines of "Your new hardware is installed and ready.", I don't get a choice to cancel it.

That doesnt install DRIVERS. Just the HARDWARE. It is OK.

Silat has probably made one of the most important points on installation of new drivers.  He mentioned "DRIVER CLEANER", as just uninstalling the drivers from the control panel rarely if ever removes the references in the system registry for the removed driver(s).  I use Driver Cleaner Pro and it is a freeware program available at http://www.drivercleaner.net.

The program works for all flavors of popular graphics cards as well as sound cards.

Hope this helps ya out.

Skuzzy - Does installing the old ATI drivers get you anything else besides color dot dar ? Just curious.
