the problem was there was a strong tail wind to target and very stronge head wind comming home.. quite a few ran out of fuel and dithched in channel..

I"ll have to use that picture... and find out how the two escorting P-51's are.  It's a great picture Guppy

By the way Guppy, not trying to high jack this thread, I am looking for pictures of the 325th launching off the USS Ranger in there P-40E or F's.  It was before they had the checkertail tail fin. I have a video of it, but you can't make out the serial numbers.  I wonder if you have anything on that, or have access to find it.

From what I've found from researching these particular mustangs is they belong to the 319th FS.

Aircraft No. 73 is USAAF S/N 42-103443, Plane Name: Margaret, Pilots: Edwin L. Williams (1 Kill in a Mustang) and Howard F. Welch. Salvaged 9-2-45.

Aircraft No. 87 is USAAF S/N 43-24852, Plane Name: Gravel Gertie/Delightful Dee, Pilot: Jack H. Bond (4 Kills in a Mustang). MIA 10-12-44.

I sent off an email to Mr. Fiedler and this is what he said.

Squadron numbers are as follows:  10 - 39   317th
                                         40 - 69   318th
                                         70 - 99`  319th
There are modifications however.  In the 317th we used some numbers lower than 10; e.g., 5,7,8,9.  I think there were others also like 2 and 3??
These pictures are taken on the mission to Russia called Frantic from 2 to 11 June 1944.  As you can see, they are from the 319th and #73 was flown by 2nd Lt Howard F. Welch and #87 was flown by 1/Lt Arthur C. Albin.
Those are excellent pictures and are the best I have seen to date.  Usually one can see the birds but the numbers were difficult to make out.
Hope the above helps,
Cordially,  Art

Sorry spade didn't mean to highjack.  :aok

Stream wouldn't surprise me if another crew was flying either aircraft. These were the crews assigned to those aircraft.

Only thing I could find so far.  P40Fs launching from USS Ranger  January 19, 1943 from the 325th FG.  It was a small photo in a P40 book so I couldn't blow it up much.  Can't read a serial number on the lead bird or the nose art.

I'll keep looking

The tail was a replacement tail in natural metal as was the crew door and a panal under the right wing.

OD/Gray otherwise
