Pope dies, flags at half staff.. sep. church and state?
« on: April 02, 2005, 06:01:10 PM »
Not a flame post or anything, just really curious.

Would flags be lowered to half staff in the US if .. say,  the Dali Lama passed away?

I can understand people lowering their flags to half staff on their own, but the pres. ordered FEDERAL buildings to do so.

In any case, we'll miss ya Pope! !

Yup what he said.  It's not about religion or respecting the establishment there of.  The pope is more or less a diplomat....a very big and powerfull one at that.

I myself am happy for the pope.

I didnt know he was head of state. Hmm.

Gscholz: no, but it would if it was a head of state that has had such a big impact (in the good way) on the world. Thats why I asked if the same would be done if the Dali Lama passed away.

no, but i think that in this case it was appropriate.

the pope was generally loved by the american people and made several visits to the states.

people consider his contributions responsible for a good part of the fall of communism in eastern europe.

he was pretty much a rock star.

i would personally have no problem with the dhali llama being honored with a memorial, however, it would be offensive to the chinese who want tibet to concede all bases are belong to them.

it probably wont happen.

the pope is considered a western figure or at least a part of the western team, is less contriversial and has a greater following in the u.s.

(though before kennedy the idea of a catholic as president was ridiculous...weve come a long way in that sense.)

if i am not miistaken,  boosh is a protestant...which i find to be far more intruiging from the religious standpoint.

The American flag should not fly at half staff it in no-way directly affects the entire american populace.

Neither does any other event that causes the flag to go half staff.  You really need to deprogram all that socialist ideology your teachers are teaching in High School.  When/if you go to college it gets worse and you may end up damaged for good.

There is no way any ONE event affects the "entire American populace"

Hawklore,

Gunslinger said it very succinctly. Just because you do not hold the individual in any high esteem does not mean the head of a very friendly and supportive state is not due state recognition. FWIW other nations have rendered the same curtesy and respect for those BELOW head of state status in this country.

It in no way diminishes the status of the US to render honors to the Pope. It is also not a violation of church and state nor is it any acknowledgement that the Pope led this nation. It is simply recognition of the passing of a head of state and of that man's accomplishments and leadership.

aamraam,

You won't find a lot in the constitution. It isn't the end document, it's the beginning.
