New Card
« on: April 04, 2005, 12:13:52 PM »
Hey,

Just bought ATI 9600XT 128 mem and have no idea what settings to use or what drivers would be best.

I have

P4 1.5  256 ram....should i preload in main mem or video mem should i enable fastwrite on the Video card should i use the lastest drivers or the 4.1 or should I try the omega?

Any help would be great!!!!

See you in the skies...

Use the 4.1 Catalyst drivers.  Only use the ATI control panel, dont install the catalyst control panel.

What he said, omega drivers won't help cause your cpu is too slow, Don't enable fast writes, use 256 max texture size & preload to ram only, get more ram, set AA no higher than 2x AF off, turn viewing range down to 1 mile, turn off animated water and most of all start saving for a better cpu & mobo.

He can run with animated water.  The shaders will not impact the ATI card like it does NVidia FX5xxx cards.  The NVidia FX6xxx cards should be ok with the shaders as well.

I would use the Catalyst 4.12's with the ATI Control Panel.  If you do not have a VIVO card, then do yourself a favor and download the two pieces (driver and control panel) separately, then install the drvers, followed by the control panel.
This will keep the WMD drivers from being installed, which are only needed if you have a VIVO card and want to watch TV (or some other video device connected to the video in of the card) on your monitor.

I'm using the 4.7 cats on my 9600pro 128 w/win98se

some of the ati drivers give ya washed out colours in AH you just have to keep trying different ones til ya find the best ones.

mines set at 8x agp
fastwrite is ON

AA is application preference
AF and AFM is app preference
texture and mipmap detail on high quality
truform is off

im not preloading any textures

animated water works fine and the high detailed textures  ... i turned off animated water though because it messes up my depth perception in the game .

ingame sliders are at halfway
distance at 3 miles .

FPS 30 low 85 high  60-65 avg

vsync has to be on ..

(some guys turn this off to get those high frame rates , but in actuallity it messes up the timing between the puter and the monitor ... heathen terms )

truform is off on mine ..

Vsync should always be on.  With your computer lacking in RAM, I'd leave Truform off.

DOH!  Beat me to it lol.
