Elderly neighbor problem/need solution
« on: April 07, 2005, 10:15:20 AM »
My 80ish  neighbor asked me to setup his
new DVD player which I gladly agreed to plug in one evening with some serious difficulties due to the fact that they have so many external devices I was having a nightmare of a time finding an aux iniput to plug the DVD into, but finally settled on TV aux2 then showed him how to use the remote to change the TV to aux 2 to view the DVD......No big deal so far and it just worked......
OK since  this episode they now blame me for the stereo remote not changing the
volume levels which I had no interaction with but am too polite to explain they are wrong but willing to make it work nevertheless....
This is the setup.."I am not an AV pro just a normal manual reader"

1 Sat feed to TV
2: VCR to Sat box
3:Play station to TV Aux 1
4:DVD to TV Aux 2
5: Stereo to TV Audio LR
6: Other device?
7: Sat reciever "I have never used one"

Just a wiring clusterf%&k
Includng a remote for each device....

Question...
I need some type of management device that I can plug all outputs into and a way to get rid of the 6 remote controls....

Any ideas?

Tojo

universal remotes work wonders.  once you have them programmed, life becomes a walk in the park.

That's no joke. A nice, IR-Learning remote at Best Buy won't set them back much. Mine controls TV, Cable, DVD, Xbox, PC #1, PC #2, and 2 surround sound systems from 1 remote. Worth every penny.

If they have a decent A/V receiver, just run everything into the back of it, and connect it's output to the TV. Use it for a device selector.

A friend of mine just bought a device "hub" for his system.  Everything plugs directly into that and it has one remote control.  It is "smart" too...if he puts in a CD the device realises that is what is wanted and automatically switches to CD mode...same if he puts a DVD in...switches automatically.  Might be the perfect solution for your neighbors.

If you are interested I'll ask him for the brand name and cost etc.

Let me know.

I use the Kameleon - URC 9960 . It's very versatile and can control a ton of different components. It really depends on how much the guy is willing to spend. It's not a guaranteed that a particular remote will cover all his gear but you can research that on the site to see if this product will fit his needs. I'm extremely happy with it. If he gets something like this you may need to sit down and set it all up and then tell him what controls what.

You can check it out here.
