looking for pinup photo of lorraine day
« on: April 08, 2005, 07:41:59 PM »
This is the photo featured on Art Heiden's P-38 "Lucky Lady".  She's wearing a black negligee.

Haven't been able to find anything on Google.

EDIT:

NM - its "Laraine" not "Lorraine" - that helped.

Well I found a photo that was most likely from the same photo shoot. It's not the original though he had on the airframe. The negligee in question though from a photo I've seen of the original aircraft isn't black. I have found some photos of her in a black negligee though. Seems the one that was originally on there had her sitting with her left leg in front with her upper torso turned towards the camera with a huge fro going on. Still looking though.

If you've got a some what clear photo of the original airframe with the black negligee then post it so I can refer to it instead. If it's black as you say it is then I may have already found it.

This link may not fly, but here it is:

Art Heiden told me in an email she was in a black negligee, but it really doesn't look black to me.   Although I have seen a few photos of her now in the black negligee.    She's really quite a beautiful woman.

Okay here's a closer photo of that panel taken off the airframe.

Here's a photo I found of Laraine Day wearing a similiar outfit but in a different pose. Take a good look you can see that the drapes in the background are the same. Only difference is in the original photo the drapes are closed. You will also notice that the spread she is sitting on is the same too. It looks like they also brought some matching pillows in behind her.

Art's a real great guy. But then, they all are.

Nice find, Cobra - actually I think the scale is so small that either of those would work nicely.    I doubt much detail will remain by the time I get it on the skin and scaled properly - but I wanted to start with the real thing.

"Lucky Lady" has an interesting story, detailed on the 20thFG website.   Apparently Miss Day knew about her namesake aircraft, and was concerned with the a/c and her crew.

Even movie stars were a different breed back then.

Interesting - the removed panel doesn't match the actual aircraft shots, wrt the location of the photo, kill markers, mission markers, etc.

Oboe I noticed that about the panel also. This is the link to where I found that upclose photo. It says the panel had been recently repainted at the time of that photo. I'll check my other books to see if I can find out more.

Lucky Lady

If it at one time it was a black nighty then here's a few photos I found of her in one.

From what I understand the original may have been not long after he took that P-38 over. They may have just removed the old name on the nose and repainted a larger "kills" box over the top of the original pilots/crew chief box.

Lucky Lady not long after the transfer from Col. Franklin to Lt. Heiden. You'll notice the Lucky Lady is there but there is an older and smaller box painted on there. It most likely contained the crew chiefs name and a few other items. It's kind of hard to read so who knows. It may have been a photo from the transitional stage between the early markings of Col. Franklin and the early markings of Lt. Heiden. The photo I posted earlier may be from a later updated paint job of the nose.
