I cannot run AH for longer than 5 minutes without a CTD, same thing with alot of games including CounterStrike Source.  Computer was running fine for 5 months no problems.  Lately I have been getting nothing but CD's.  I reformated did a clean install of everything but I am still getting CTD's

System Specs
XP2400+ @2.4Ghz
1GB PC3200 HyperX Ram
80GB WD SE HD
Radeon 9800Pro
Latest Omega Drivers (tried uninstalling those and using Catalysts same issue)
DirectX 9.0c

Lots of things could cause this.

If you have done a fresh installation of the OS (complete reformat), installed the latest motherboard drivers, then we can look elsewhere.

First, what version of the Catalyst drivers are you using?  The 4.12's seem to be the most stable I have found.  Make sure you do not install the Catalyst Control Center.  Only the ATI Control Panel.

Make sure you have the latest sound card drivers to.

Next, it could be heat or power related, but let's start with the basics.

Sounds like your video card is heating up to much.  Makesure your fan on video card and your case fans are clear and running.

? for U skuzzy.  What drivers should I use for a Radeon XT800XL 256 meg card as I am a first time user of a ATI card.

The X800XL is a new card.  You will need to use the latest drivers from ATI as they will be the only ones with the proper identifier detection for that card.

Ok that is what I am using but I also am getting the CTD too.  Is this a driver issue or is it a game issue?

I do not believe this to be the issue I played Silent Hunter III for 2 hours straight and not a hickup.

Is the Video card an upgrade?

I upgraded my HP media center PC to an ATI 9800 Pro.  I had problems with heat buildup inside the case due to insufficient ventilation for the increased heat generation of the new more power hungry card.

I had to install an additional case fan and drill more vent holes to keep it cool enough.:aok

SHIII is not going to stress a video card like AH will.  Do not confuse eyecandy with actual work a video card is doing.  Just FYI.

Hoowever, I would like to know if the CTD's are continuing after the patch today.

For me they BEGAN after the patch today!

I received to blank BSOD's, two CTD's and
two "AH jas experienced a problem and has to close"
messages.
I have NEVER had those occur in AH before!

This was in SEA, Coral Sea terrain.

I had flown all afternoon in the CT pre-patch
with no problems other than the absolute TERRIBLE
frame rates due to the trees!

It could be terrain related.  However, that is speculation.  I'll dig more into it.  Does it seem worse in the SEA versus the MA?  How about the CT or Training arenas?

GB if I may make a suggestion?  Upgrade your Direct X to 9.0c and replace that onboard sound.  Thats if you have not done this already.  If you have then I have no useful suggestions lol.

I haven't had a chance to go back in to CT yet
to check and I haven't been in the MA for months.

If I have some time this weekend I'll see if I can
gather some more data but I'm primarily concerned about
tomorrows Coral Sea frame. Everything else can wait!

I have DirX9.0b installed now and have 9.0c files in my d/l directory
but as I recall I did install DirX9.0c a couple
of months ago and it PORKED something so I
backed out to 9.0b using a System Restore point.
As to the on board sound, it's been just fine up
until now and I'm not really inclined to start opening up
the system and dicking around. Being retired now
I don't make the big bucks anymore and cant'
afford to upgrade my system every time some SW entity adds
more bells, whistles or eye candy.

I'd be perfectly happy resorting back to DOS AW, without the $6/hour rate of course :)

An update...I just spent 2 hours in the CT without encountering any problems.

I went into the SEA with the CS terrain for about 1/2 hour with no problems.

That's all the time I have for testing today.

We shall see what tomorrow brings during the scenario frame.
