Can a splitter be used on two side by side machines through one cable modem if only one is accessing the net at a time? I just spent all my money and I can't get the wireless stuff I want for a few weeks. Then one machine moves to a different room. What are the options for hardwiring two machines. A non wireless router etc.?

Add a second network card to the main machine ($10), connect the two with a crossover cable, run the network setup wizzard on the main machine then the other one and your up and running.

Thanks. I started to do that and then a friend gave me his old router.
That's pretty lucky since I'm an antisocial salamander and don't like very many people.

Just get a cheap broadband router and be done with it. You should be able to get one for $20 from the bargain or return bin at most decent computer stores. You'll have more security and flexibility, and they don't cost much more than a second NIC.
