I wouldn't dismiss the IL-2 that easily. I find it amusing to nurse the IL-2 up to about 20k and go hunting. The damned thing will exceed 500 mph in a dive
with good control! Ask 40Dog about being bounced by a Stormovic at 15k....
It also rips up bombers pretty good too. Moreover, it can take some serious abuse.
No, it's not a great sustained turner, but its instantaneous turn is very good.
However, if you are low and slow, just point the nose at everything and anything you see.... Anyone foolish enough not to bear off will regret it at once.
