I wanted to do a test before I commited to the first idea I had, so I did and it looks like the nose is doable.

The second will take a bit more work but will look even more eye-catching!

Hey Skuzzy, is there any chance we can get more light in the skin viewer? I'm finding it hard to see a lot of the time. Maybe a fullbright mode (to make sure textures are aligned) that can be toggled on/off.

Nice Krusty, I was actually looking forward to seeing that checkered nose JG1 machine.  Keep it up!

I could use a little help with the JG1 "White 1" checker-nose. I'm having a hard time finding references of the top surfaces. I don't know what they looked like on the real thing.

I've never tried skinning before, and never tried to do a model kit with a paint scheme different from what's on the box, so I've wondered how you get wing schemes too.  Profiles are usually just that, and other than finding the correct after-market decal set (which usually does have all of the paint scheme information for the particular subject plane), I have no clue.  Have you tried looking for a decal sheet from Eagle Editions, Kommandeur, etc.?

Made some progress (this time in 1024 res). Still having an issue with "jaggies" on the top of the nose checkerboard pattern. I think I can resolve it, however.

Latest update:

Needs to have panel lines toned down (they're 100% right now, still working on the skin)
Needs a few color tweaks here and there (ignore the red inside the engine cowling)
Needs pilot's emblem under cockpit (can't find a good picture of it!)
Needs weathering.

I'm excited to see these two A5s taking shape.  Really nice color schemes.

I agree the panel lines need to be toned down, and suggest the rivets need toning down as well.

Acually I use a duplicate set of panle lines, one 100% black, the other 100% white.   The white line layer gets offest one pixel down and to the rear of the plane relative to the black layer.

I do the same with the rviets, except offset the rivets up and forward.

Then I play with the opacity of all 4 layers to get something that looks right.

I simplify things. I've done it the way you suggest, but lately I just put a drop shadow with 2 pixels distance and 1 pixel's blur (this offsets it 1 pixel and makes it less crisp) then fiddle with opacity of the shadow and of the layer. Panel lines look much better now. Still not final, but leaps and bounds above the pic I just posted.

Looking good Krusty. Only thing i can suggest is that the black isn't dark enough to contrast correctly, maybe when you do the exhaust stains it will be more pronounced though.

Yes, like I said the colors need some tweaking here and there. I'll make the chevrons (whatever they're called) darker. plus the stains will help a lot.

As for the shadow on the panel lines, I remembered why I didn't use it before. It's a constant angle. I had to make a second layer, select areas and nudge them so all the panel lines "go" in the same direction.

I'm getting there. This skin is nearing completion. But I need to find out what is written on the gear doors, what is written by the tail wheel, and the two small areas on the tail (one by the mounting hole and one near the bottom). I have no idea what text goes there. I know what goes on a 109, but I've never done a 190 before.

I'm basically done now. I might want to darken the fuselage sides a bit by turning down a filter I have over them. I need the heart emblem but I have no sources for it. I don't know the text that goes on the gear doors, but that's a small detail. From what I can tell many of the 190s I've seen pictures of didn't have too much of a stain from the engine exhaust. So I put enough to notice but not enough to obscure details.

From what I've noticed the LW planes had more severe exhaust stains in the final stages of the war. I guess they were using whatever they could find for fuel in those days.

These are mid war birds. Example: Take a look at the first image posted (the test shot). I only worked on the nose, the rest is the default skin. Not much exhaust stains there. Nor are there much on most mid-war birds. Towards the end I believe ya, but for these ones, I don't think it's in-character.
