I don't think I've been killed by a HO since my first month here at AH.

It doesn't take a freaken member of mensa to dodge the HO.  Plus more often then not, the person going for the HO loses the advantage after the merge.

I wonder how many threads there are on this subject. This and Kill Shooter have to be the two most boring discussions posted over the years.

Obviously this was a tactic in WWII not just in this sim.

All this proves is that even in RL FW pilots were HO dweebs.  :)

LOL, I think the Germans realized their birds had the huge nose with lots of big, heavy metal between them and bullets so they figured they had a better chance of winning a HO.

Who knows? You hadda be there I guess :)

I think the last two posts illustrate what I said:  In WWII (which this game was supposed to be modeled after), the HO was a valid and often used tactic.
Just because it doesn't fit with your current interpretation of what air combat is supposed to be, doesn't negate the fact that it was actually used in WWII.
I don't think it's too cool to be calling the (mostly) men who actually put their REAL azzes on the line in REAL air to air combat "Dweebs", "bananas", etc. just because some other guy doesn't fly the way you want him to!
BTW, in that interview with Yeager, I don't recall him complaining that the luftwaffe pilots were HO'ing the USA pilots, right?  The difference between Yeager and some of the AH "pilots"?  Yeager's were big enough to accept the fact that he got shot down, was lucky enough to survive the encounter, and got on with his life.
I'd suggest some of the same for our AH bretheren here - if you're dumb enough to got shot down by a HOer, then suck it up, be glad it's not real life, hop in your plane, and try to fly smarter next time!

(I've obviously got wayyyyyy too much time on my hands....)

Bring 'em on!  I'll be flying you favorite head on airplanes which make "E" out of thin air.  That's right the LA7 & N1Ks.  I'll see your head on and raise you a bunch!  I'm mastering the art of the head on and I'll be hunting you down.  Watch your 6 because you might see me there between my head on passes.  I'll give you one freebee head on pass to see if you are a "bowler" and if so Fights On!

Enjoy the simulation and have fun!

Edmo, I encountered both a Spit 5 and 110 yesterday near V71, on Mindanao(sp?).   I was in an La7, and turned with both, without straining.  I was HO'd by the 110 four times, each time he missed BAD.   I played the angles and never let him have a clear HO pass.  I shot down the Spit 5 with ease, and then the 110 revved.  I was low on fuel (7 mins) and started back, and noticed that the 110 was nutting up to chase me.  He turned again, he was in the sissy silk 5 seconds afterwards.   It is sad that some just up to HO people.   Then again, I landed.

Keep your chin up.

I love these topics... lol

Saturday I was online flying for a little while.... and saw another of the 1000s of comments about an HO dweeb on 200 and kinda lost my mind for a second. I basically just said instead of whining about the HO, take back off and get your revenge.

I was then proceeded to be told that a n00b should keep out of it, and how it's frowned upon, and how I shouldn't do it (I wasn't the HOer, and I typically don't HO). I KNOW it's frowned upon, but no amount of whining has stopped people from doing it. Why? Because if someone's going for a HO, it's already apparent they don't care about flying against you, only killing you.

Of course, I still feel only 50% of the supposed HOs out there are really HOs... but that's neither here nor there..

Head ons are part of the game. For many planes its the only shot you have. People need to goto the DA and create their own rules of engagement for no headons if they dont like them. In the MA its anything goes.

The way I see it:

Scenario 1:

I am flying along in my heavy 38 (or 51, or jug, or 110).  Uberpilot sees me.  I am 5k below at 220 mph, cruising to the target.  Or he could be co-alt, or a bit below.  But he is fast and light.

Uber turns toward me to do some pilot stuff, get on my tail, and shoot me down.  He's 10 k out, coming in fast, and I have about two minutes (do the math) until he covers that distance and saddles up.

My choices:

IF I see him in time, I can get light, dive a bit, and build up some speed.  BUT Uber will have an E advantage in the following engagement--there is no time to equalize our energy.  If he is closer when I see him, I can't even do that.

OR I can lose the ord, and turn into him.  If he wants a fight, he gets one.  My best shot is going to be a HO, since I don't have the E to do acm with him.

Scenario 2:

I am upping at a disputed base, and there are enemy planes in the air all around me.  (yeah, I know, that ain't too smart--but I do it anyway, and so do you).  The vulchers have E, they have position, and they want blood.

Any shot I can get is good for me.  Ubervulcher has to fly 25 miles to get back into this fight.  I just need to click on a runway.

Scenario 3:

After skillfully avoiding detection by Uberpilot, I have made it to the base with my bombs and rockets.  Only to find that there are 12 LaLas, 2 Hurri 2cs, and an IL2 up defending the base.  My mission is to take out a FH or two.

Pass 1-In, drop 2k on FH, out, reverse.

Pass 2-Rockets on FH, it goes boom.

Uber and his buddies are all doing the usual "chase the jabo" trick.  I have the E at first, but it bleeds on every reversal.  After two passes, I am about Co-E with the defenders.  There are twenty of them, all chasing poor little old me.  In La7s.  They will catch me.  Then they will shoot me down.  If I try any pilot stuff, one of the 20 or so will get a shot before I get one.

So I turn around and give them a faceful of ammo.  If I am lucky, I get one or two to go to hell with me.

HOs are tactically sound

This is too funny.  I regret that I ever played Devil's Advocate on this issue.

First of all, no one thinks any man who has the balls to climb into a real cockpit of a real fighter plane and face down real enemies is a "dweeb" or anything else.  Second of all, they did what they felt they had to do to survive.  In a life or death situation, when the guy you didnt shoot down might be back up tomorrow to kill you or one of your buddies, you take them out any way you can.  Thats life (and death).  It's war.

This isnt.  Its a game with cartoon planes and unlimited lives.  If you have to stoop to easy mode flying, I have every right to feel like your a dweeb and call you one.  If it bothers you, sorry.  Obviously you feel inferior for not knowing any better ACM than a HO if it gets to you that bad.  You still have the right to fly and fight however you like.  You pay your 14.95 per month just like I do.  Just dont bring up what real men did in a real war as a defense when people call you a dweeb because the circumstances are totally different.

Did it happen in real life?  Of course.  Every air force of every country thats existed since WWI has had someone who had an opportunity for a head-on shot and took it.  And I dont blame them one bit, because I'll bet the other guy wasnt going to fly past with just a salute.  Whether it happened in real life or not is irrellevant to anything but a discussion of tactics.
