Golfer,
Hate to break it to ya - but the midwest isn't exactly beaming with hot spots of interest when it comes to airports. However, a few suggestions within your range.
Bowman Field, Louisville KY (KLOU) - historic place that is worth going to. Aside from 6 foot tall blondes that Louisville has a mysterious stash of, it has an interesting history around the airport.
IN76 - Culver Field. If you've ever heard of Culver Academies in Indiana, then you'll know this spot. It is a mini westpoint within the midwest. Went to camp there for several years.
Beyond 200 NM
Block Island - KBID - Anyone in the north east who needs a severe icebreaker for the first date goes here since its so close and convienent for the propeller heads. 2500 ft and usually packed end to end on the weekends - lots of boobies to look at.
Danbury CT - KDXR - Anyone who has trained here can attest to the fact that if you can land here you can land anywhere - happens to be a trueism.
Igor I Sikorsky Memorial - KBDR - Home of Chance Voyet (sp) - made F4's throughout WW2 and Korea - later bought up by Allison and made tank engines. Our own TWRATM is the tower chief at this field - and is my old home base.
